SUMMARY:1940 | People and Images. Cyprus - Greece
DESCRIPTION:World War II has been the deadliest conflict in human history\, the “point zero” of European and global civilization. Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. Featured in the context of the exhibition is Dimitris Vattis’ photography project “The War’s Forgotten”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Catherine Loui Nikita\, Director of BPR Cultural Management. \nThe President of the Republic of Cyprus will inaugurate the exhibition on Tuesday\, 9 April 2019\, at 19:00 \nDuration: 10.04.19 – 31.12.19\nVisiting hours: Mon – Sun 10:00-19:00 \n86-90 Faneromenis Str.\, Old Nicosia \nT: 22128157

SUMMARY:Picasso at the Cyprus Museum - Works in Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities announces the organization of the exhibition “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay” \n12 June – 8 September 2019 \nAt the mature age of sixty-five\, Pablo Picasso developed a passion for ceramic art\, which became one of his main forms of expression until the end of his life. In fact\, the famous artist’s systematic engagement with ceramics began in 1946 in Vallauris\, while on vacation there. In this village in the South of France\, Picasso met the owners of the ‘Madoura’ pottery workshop\, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. The couple had reopened an old ceramic workshop with a traditional wood-burning kiln. So great was the artist’s excitement with the place and the potential of clay as a material\, that a year later he settled in Vallauris together with his new partner\, Françoise Gilot. This was the beginning of an extremely fruitful collaboration with the Ramié couple\, who actually put both their workshop and artisans at the disposal of the artist. Thus\, the ideal conditions were created for Picasso to begin experimenting feverishly with the various techniques of clay. \nThe ancient art of pottery\, the malleability and durability of clay as a raw material\, the unpredictable end result\, the combination of arts (painting\, sculpture\, pottery)\, the usability and transformation of clay objects were all elements that fascinated Picasso. At the same time\, the distinctive features of the South of France and Vallauris in particular\, such as the ample space\, the light\, the fragrances of nature and the simplicity of everyday life\, all decisively contributed to the opening of a new and important chapter in the life of the artist. Over the next years and until 1971\, Picasso created an enormous number of original ceramic works\, which exceed 3\,500 in number. \nPicasso believed that the art of ancient civilizations “is not a thing of the past”. In his ceramic works\, the artist evidently uses various shapes\, motifs\, textures and themes from antiquity and mythology\, without copying them\, however. Instead\, he created a whole new reality. From his preparatory sketches to his final works\, one can distinguish influences from the pottery art of ancient cultures\, particularly those of the Mediterranean region. \nThe exhibition\, “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay”\, organized by the Department of Antiquities\, as part of the Picasso Mediterranée programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris\, presents a small but representative part of Picasso’s ceramic creations\, with original and unique works. At the same time\, the exhibition includes Cypriot antiquities\, grouped in such a way as to highlight specific themes\, shapes and motifs of antiquity\, whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso’s works. The visitor is invited to reflect on and sense possible points of encounter and dialogue\, but also common characteristics and traits\, many of which could have developed randomly. \nIndeed\, was Picasso aware of Cypriot antiquities? What is certain is that the artist never visited Cyprus. His work\, however\, entitled “Faces of a Woman”\, which was the spark for this exhibition\, was inspired by a Cypriot clay composite vessel of the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC)\, which is exhibited at the Louvre Museum\, while similar ones are part of the Cyprus Museum collection. Although in the “Faces of a Woman” the comparison with a specific antiquity is evident\, the choice of Cypriot antiquities for the other Picasso works was made in such a way as to bring to the fore the common themes\, the similar motifs\, the uses and the unchanged techniques that one can distinguish in the works of the anonymous creators of antiquity and those of the 20th century eponymous artist. For this reason\, the interest of the exhibition’s curators focused mainly on issues\, such as the masquerading and playing with the bull figure\, the anthropomorphism and zoomorphism of the vessels\, the elaborate and multidimensional handles\, the painted decoration\, the posture of the body and the pictorial scenes on vessels. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Greek and English. \nOpening Hours\nTuesday – Friday: 8.00 – 18.00\nSaturday: 9.00 – 17.00\nSunday: 10.00 – 13.00\nMonday: closed

SUMMARY:Sistema in Concert - World Refugee Day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sistema Cyprus’ orchestra is preparing to draw everyone back into its rhythm at its upcoming concert which is dedicated to the World Refugee Day. Seventy five children from Nicosia and Larnaca will be joined by Windcraft Junior Band to showcase their talent and achievements through a musical program that will offer the audience some beautiful music and great inspiration. The concert will take place on Wednesday June 12th at 18:30 at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation’s Open Air Theatre in Faneromeni\, Nicosia. \nThe concert is organized under the auspices of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus as part of its activities on the occasion of this World Refugee Day. With the slogan “Join us and take a step #WithRefugees” the concert aims to send a ‘loud musical’ message calling for the respect\, acceptance and integration of refugees into the new societies. Across the world\, institutions and individual people from all different socio-economic levels\, take small or big steps in solidarity with refugees. Inspired by the actions of so many others\, we invite each and every one of you to take a step and support refugees in any way you can on this World Refugee Day. \nThe orchestra\, under the artistic and musical direction of Petros Stylianou\, promises to take the audience on a musical journey through rhythms and melodies from around the world and especially from Latin America.\nAdmission at the concert is free of charge and we would be honored if you joined us in our cause. The audience will also have the opportunity to make a donation to Sistema Cyprus on the day\, supporting its efforts to bring social change through music. \nAbout UNHCR\nUNHCR was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950 to help millions of refugees in the aftermath of World War II. We work to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country\, having fled persecution or war at home. We help to build better futures for refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people\, many of whom have nobody left to turn to.\nIn Cyprus\, UNHCR opened an office in 1974 to organise and coordinate humanitarian assistance for the displaced populations in both communities. Today\, UNHCR’s primary objective is to assist the Government to further develop and improve its asylum legislation\, procedures and capacities for a refugee protection system fully in line with international standards. We seek to ensure respect for refugee rights and acceptable standards of treatment of asylum-seekers\, particularly as regards access to asylum procedures\, reception conditions and freedom of movement. We promote good practices in relation to policies and measures that support the effective integration of refugees into the social\, economic and cultural fabric of Cypriot society. We advocate for Cyprus’ accession to the UN Conventions for the prevention of statelessness and the protection of stateless persons. \nAbout Sistema Cyprus\nSistema Cyprus is a music and social program inspired by El Sistema of Venezuela that aims to provide all children and young people with free music education through orchestras and choirs. The second aim is to promote respect and recognition of vulnerable population groups in each society. The program began in September of 2018\, housed at the Peace hall in Ledras Steet through the support of the Municipality of Nicosia and in Larnaca\, through collaboration with the Foundation of Cultural Creativity for Children and Youth.Sistema Cyprus is a member of Sistema Europe\, which is the European network of all El Sistema inspired programs.\nYou can find more information about Sistema Cyprus on its website www.sistemacyprus.com as well as on its social media pages on Facebook and Instagram.

SUMMARY:22nd Contemporary Dance Festival - Greece
DESCRIPTION:A dance performance on the borders of theatre and music; a poetic swarming speech unwinding the thread of the female narrative on stage. \nSpeechless is inspired by public speeches\, manifestos\, articles and texts\, bringing to the fore the fragmentary and unofficial voice of women as it has travelled through the centuries before reaching the present day. \nFemale emancipation and independence\, gender equality issues are constantly recurring and seem more and more relevant to our days. How does the female speech travelling through time sound today? How do we connect with the female narrative? \nSofia Mavragani\, persevering on a socio-political problematic\, with her subtle humorous approach and a disposition for ludic exploration\, returns to her collaboration with Martha Mavroidi\, known for the fusion of traditional and contemporary music. In Speechless\, Martha Mavroidi creates vocal compositions for a chamber orchestra where the performers themselves are the musical instruments. Chara Kotsali\, Giorgos Kotsifakis and Sania Stribakou alternate in a challenging performance on the fundament of dance that sometimes draws towards theatre and sometimes towards music. With a distinctive lyricism and among pop raptures\, Speechless becomes the channel through which we follow the voice of women\, as it has travelled through the years. \nSofia Mavragani is an exceptional case in the field of dance as she has not followed the regular dance curriculum. She graduated from the “Athens School of Economics” (Bachelor in Business Administration (2000)) and from the EDDC-European Dance Development Centre\, ArtEZ-University of Arts\, Arnhem\, NL\, (Bachelor in Dance Making)\, 2005. \nHer works\, known for their socio-political focus\, have been presented at several festivals and venues in Greece and abroad (Aerowaves19\, Documenta 14\, Athens & Epidaurus Festival\, Megaron: the Athens Concert Hall\, Kalamata International Dance Festival\, Dimitria Festival (Thessaloniki)\, MIRfestival (Athens)\, State Theatre of Northern Greece\, Park your ID festival (Maastricht)\, Dance Days International Festival (Chania)\, Apollon Theatre (Syros)\, Τeatro Belisario (Buenos Aires)\, Teatro Labrade (Madrid)\, Cacoyiannis Foundation (Athens)\, etc.). \nBeing fondly interested in the field of education and exchange\, she develops experimental workshops on improvisation and composition\, such as the research project playforPLACE which has travelled to 17 cities\, in Europe\, Latin America\, Africa and Oceania\, which is a workshop of creative collaboration between young choreographers and musicians-composers annually held at Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall. In parallel\, she teaches dance improvisation and choreography at dance schools and dance centres in Greece and abroad. SUMMARY:The Wedding of Koutroulis
DESCRIPTION:The popular Greek comedy “The Wedding of Koutroulis” is presented by Theatro Ena. \nA tailor\, Manolis Koutroulis\, falls in love with Anthousa\, the daughter of a middle-class family\, but she only has eyes for Leonidas\, a young policeman. To avoid the prospective groom without opposing her father\, Anthousa says that she will marry the illiterate Koutroulis on condition that he becomes a minister of state. Koutroulis launches his election campaign\, uses every means at his disposal and appears to have achieved the impossible. And so the ambitious Anthousa marries him. But it soon transpires that the tailor has not in fact been made a minister and that he has fallen victim to cunning exploiters of his naïveté. \nAlexandros Rizos Rangavis wrote Koutroulis’s Wedding in 1845\, but for 21st-century audiences the play might have been written today. It is a political satire that exposes all the ills that have accompanied the state of affairs and the mentality prevailing in Greece from its foundation to the present day. Cronyism\, slavish deference to all things foreign\, lack of authenticity\, vested interests\, corruption and bribery are just some of the issues addressed in Rangavis’s comedy\, the timelessness of which now gives a tragic edge to a reality that to a great extent is no different today. \nAdaptation: Ermina Kyriazi\nDirector: Marinos Anogiriatis \nFor more info call: 22348203 \n(in Greek)
