SUMMARY:1940 | People and Images. Cyprus - Greece
DESCRIPTION:World War II has been the deadliest conflict in human history\, the “point zero” of European and global civilization. Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. Featured in the context of the exhibition is Dimitris Vattis’ photography project “The War’s Forgotten”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Catherine Loui Nikita\, Director of BPR Cultural Management. \nThe President of the Republic of Cyprus will inaugurate the exhibition on Tuesday\, 9 April 2019\, at 19:00 \nDuration: 10.04.19 – 31.12.19\nVisiting hours: Mon – Sun 10:00-19:00 \n86-90 Faneromenis Str.\, Old Nicosia \nT: 22128157

SUMMARY:Picasso at the Cyprus Museum - Works in Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities announces the organization of the exhibition “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay” \n12 June – 8 September 2019 \nAt the mature age of sixty-five\, Pablo Picasso developed a passion for ceramic art\, which became one of his main forms of expression until the end of his life. In fact\, the famous artist’s systematic engagement with ceramics began in 1946 in Vallauris\, while on vacation there. In this village in the South of France\, Picasso met the owners of the ‘Madoura’ pottery workshop\, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. The couple had reopened an old ceramic workshop with a traditional wood-burning kiln. So great was the artist’s excitement with the place and the potential of clay as a material\, that a year later he settled in Vallauris together with his new partner\, Françoise Gilot. This was the beginning of an extremely fruitful collaboration with the Ramié couple\, who actually put both their workshop and artisans at the disposal of the artist. Thus\, the ideal conditions were created for Picasso to begin experimenting feverishly with the various techniques of clay. \nThe ancient art of pottery\, the malleability and durability of clay as a raw material\, the unpredictable end result\, the combination of arts (painting\, sculpture\, pottery)\, the usability and transformation of clay objects were all elements that fascinated Picasso. At the same time\, the distinctive features of the South of France and Vallauris in particular\, such as the ample space\, the light\, the fragrances of nature and the simplicity of everyday life\, all decisively contributed to the opening of a new and important chapter in the life of the artist. Over the next years and until 1971\, Picasso created an enormous number of original ceramic works\, which exceed 3\,500 in number. \nPicasso believed that the art of ancient civilizations “is not a thing of the past”. In his ceramic works\, the artist evidently uses various shapes\, motifs\, textures and themes from antiquity and mythology\, without copying them\, however. Instead\, he created a whole new reality. From his preparatory sketches to his final works\, one can distinguish influences from the pottery art of ancient cultures\, particularly those of the Mediterranean region. \nThe exhibition\, “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay”\, organized by the Department of Antiquities\, as part of the Picasso Mediterranée programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris\, presents a small but representative part of Picasso’s ceramic creations\, with original and unique works. At the same time\, the exhibition includes Cypriot antiquities\, grouped in such a way as to highlight specific themes\, shapes and motifs of antiquity\, whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso’s works. The visitor is invited to reflect on and sense possible points of encounter and dialogue\, but also common characteristics and traits\, many of which could have developed randomly. \nIndeed\, was Picasso aware of Cypriot antiquities? What is certain is that the artist never visited Cyprus. His work\, however\, entitled “Faces of a Woman”\, which was the spark for this exhibition\, was inspired by a Cypriot clay composite vessel of the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC)\, which is exhibited at the Louvre Museum\, while similar ones are part of the Cyprus Museum collection. Although in the “Faces of a Woman” the comparison with a specific antiquity is evident\, the choice of Cypriot antiquities for the other Picasso works was made in such a way as to bring to the fore the common themes\, the similar motifs\, the uses and the unchanged techniques that one can distinguish in the works of the anonymous creators of antiquity and those of the 20th century eponymous artist. For this reason\, the interest of the exhibition’s curators focused mainly on issues\, such as the masquerading and playing with the bull figure\, the anthropomorphism and zoomorphism of the vessels\, the elaborate and multidimensional handles\, the painted decoration\, the posture of the body and the pictorial scenes on vessels. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Greek and English. \nOpening Hours\nTuesday – Friday: 8.00 – 18.00\nSaturday: 9.00 – 17.00\nSunday: 10.00 – 13.00\nMonday: closed

SUMMARY:The Wedding of Koutroulis
DESCRIPTION:The popular Greek comedy “The Wedding of Koutroulis” is presented by Theatro Ena. \nA tailor\, Manolis Koutroulis\, falls in love with Anthousa\, the daughter of a middle-class family\, but she only has eyes for Leonidas\, a young policeman. To avoid the prospective groom without opposing her father\, Anthousa says that she will marry the illiterate Koutroulis on condition that he becomes a minister of state. Koutroulis launches his election campaign\, uses every means at his disposal and appears to have achieved the impossible. And so the ambitious Anthousa marries him. But it soon transpires that the tailor has not in fact been made a minister and that he has fallen victim to cunning exploiters of his naïveté. \nAlexandros Rizos Rangavis wrote Koutroulis’s Wedding in 1845\, but for 21st-century audiences the play might have been written today. It is a political satire that exposes all the ills that have accompanied the state of affairs and the mentality prevailing in Greece from its foundation to the present day. Cronyism\, slavish deference to all things foreign\, lack of authenticity\, vested interests\, corruption and bribery are just some of the issues addressed in Rangavis’s comedy\, the timelessness of which now gives a tragic edge to a reality that to a great extent is no different today. \nAdaptation: Ermina Kyriazi\nDirector: Marinos Anogiriatis \nFor more info call: 22348203 \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:AglanJazz 2019
DESCRIPTION:AglanJazz is held annually\, since 2006\, at Aglantzia Old Square. AglanJazz has managed\, throughout these years\, to bring jazz to the people\, and to encourage people of all age and various backgrounds\, to enjoy live performances from talented musicians from around the world\, free of charge. AglanJazz has become a highly anticipated summertime Festival\, by both the Musicians and our loyal fan base\, attracting around 4\,500 visitors every year. \nProgramme: \nTuesday 2/7 \n→ 20:30\nCyprus\nOdysseas Toumazou Trio \nOdysseas Toumazou Trio is a newly formed project dedicated to performing original compositions. Odysseas’s creations are influenced by jazz and classical music\, but also from traditional Greek and Cypriot music\, producing a unique sound catering to a wide array of audiences of diverse music tastes. Improvisation is a key element of Odysseas’s music\, enabling the audience and the environment alike to subtly influence the direction\, the sound\, and consequently\, the journey one embarks on in tandem with Odysseas and his fellow musicians. \nOdysseas Toumazou – guitar\nGeorge Koulas – drums\nAndreas Rodosthenous – electric bass \n→ 21:45\nAustria\nEdi Nulz \nA band that shows again and again the wonderfully laid-back and artful way one can free oneself from all musical constraints and traditions. The Band consists of three musicians who have opened the gates to a new musical understanding since the formation of their band in 2011. Originally coming from jazz\, the three gentlemen have basically left that all behind them and found their own musical identity\, drawing their influences from different directions.\nBesides the strong instrumental skills and the highly complex songs of the musicians\, it is above all the driving energy in the playing style\, melodies\, harmonies and riffs that sets the music of this trio apart from traditional jazz\, and is rather reminiscent of the progressive rock era in the 70s. After releasing the critically acclaimed album “An der vulgären Kante” in 2016\, Edi Nulz presented their latest album “El Perro Grande” in spring 2018. \nSiegmar Brecher – bass clarinet\nJulian Adam Pajzs – tenor and baritone guitar\nValentin Schuster – drums and pocket piano \n→ 22:45\nGermany\nSendecki – Spiegel \nVladyslav Sendecki is considered one of the most powerful and creative solo pianists in the European jazz scene. The Süddeutsche Zeitung praised him as a “master of emotion\, creating poignant musical virtuosity”. And the New York Village Voice made him one of the top five jazz pianists in the world. He is highly ranked among the great pianists of the last 100 years\, with Herbie\, Chick and Duke and Jarrett. \nFor his part\, Jürgen Spiegel has been a driving rhythmic force and sensitive sound painter in the world-famous Tingvall Trio for more than fifteen years. Now the two Hamburg-based musicians have met in an unusual piano/percussion constellation for an exciting project in the studio: Poetry meets Dynamics\, virtuosity on fine dialogue\, freedom on the exchange of emotions. A journey of sound that is difficult to avoid\, and which naturally dissolves the boundaries between jazz\, classical and world music. \nVladislav Sendecki – piano\nJungen Spiegel – drums\, percussions \nWednesday 3/7 \n→ 20:30\nCyprus\nNicolas Tryphonos Quintet \nThe Quintet is a transformation of previous collaborations between the musicians. The band navigates in the paths of Jazz and traditional music of the Eastern Mediterranean by performing original compositions. A collaboration between the Jazz Piano Trio members and two virtuoso soloists\, the Quintet masterfully renders the spirit of the Orient and the Balkans. \nNicolas Tryphonos – double bass\nGiannis Koutis – oud\nElias Ioannou – trumpet\nAndreas Panteli – piano\nAndreas Stefanou – drums \n→ 21:25\nItaly\nLuca Ciarla solOrchestra \nA creative and surprising violinist\, Luca Ciarla easily transcends the boundaries among genres to trace an innovative musical path\, a magical acoustic seduction in perfect balance between written compositions and improvisation\, traditional and contemporary sounds. He has successfully performed in jazz\, classical and world music festivals and concert series in more than fifty countries in the world. \nThe Italian violin wizard owns the stage with his fiddle and a few toy instruments. Step by step\, with a loop pedal\, he performs live all the parts\, playing the violin like a guitar\, a cello or percussion. In this imaginative landscape Luca sings\, whistles\, plays other instruments and adds new virtuosic passages; the music continuously evolves into a dazzling solo orchestra. \nLuca Ciarla – violin\, vocals\, loops\, toy instruments \n→ 22:20\nGreece\nMihalis Kalkanis Group \nHis music draws on real-life snapshots\, which are then processed into artistic creations and carve out a path of their own. Field recordings fused with electronic sounds\, traditional rhythms and melodic lines filtered through improvisational processes\, notes and sounds from all over the world transmuted through a pure jazz idiom and much more have already been recorded in his past albums (“Scarborough Tales” of 2010\, “A Parking Lot Performance” of 2012\, “World Echoes in Athens” of 2015). Mihalis Kalkanis hails from a musical family with a long tradition from Asia Minor and Northern Greece. Although rooted in the depths of this tradition his own music tends to manifest patent urban references\, a fact that renders him one of the most interesting creative musicians of the new generation. His group formed the brand new music proposition of the 2018 Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival and\, during the same year\, he travelled extensively and presented his work in other festivals and live stages all over Greece. On 3 July\, his performance is sure to captivate us and create a magical atmosphere that will awaken our emotions. \nChristos Kalkanis – clarinet\nMihalis Kalkanis – double bass\nPanagiotis Kostopoulos – drums\nStavros Lantsias – piano\nAndreas Polyzogopoulos – trumpet \n→ 23:15\nCyprus\nMacumba \nA collaboration of Chilean bassist Rodrigo Cáceres with Rodos Panagiotou\, Giorgos Morfitis & Elias Ioannou\, brings a new ‘air’ to the Jazz & Latin music scene of the island. A different approach to Latin rythms\, Afro- Cuban & Brazilian mostly\, blended through a modern post-jazz aesthetic. Macumba was formed soon after the arrival of Rodrigo Cáceres in Cyprus and it has managed to create a dynamic & innovative sound. After warm reception by live audiences in concerts & Festivals of Cyprus\, the band presents original compositions. A live performance full of groove & intense stage presence\, will transport the audience into different corners of the world. \nRodrigo Cáceres – bass & vocals\nGeorge Morfitis – piano\, percussions & vocals\nElias Ioannou – trumpet\nRodos Panagiotou – percussions & drums
