SUMMARY:1940 | People and Images. Cyprus - Greece
DESCRIPTION:World War II has been the deadliest conflict in human history\, the “point zero” of European and global civilization. Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. Featured in the context of the exhibition is Dimitris Vattis’ photography project “The War’s Forgotten”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Catherine Loui Nikita\, Director of BPR Cultural Management. \nThe President of the Republic of Cyprus will inaugurate the exhibition on Tuesday\, 9 April 2019\, at 19:00 \nDuration: 10.04.19 – 31.12.19\nVisiting hours: Mon – Sun 10:00-19:00 \n86-90 Faneromenis Str.\, Old Nicosia \nT: 22128157

SUMMARY:Picasso at the Cyprus Museum - Works in Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities announces the organization of the exhibition “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay” \n12 June – 8 September 2019 \nAt the mature age of sixty-five\, Pablo Picasso developed a passion for ceramic art\, which became one of his main forms of expression until the end of his life. In fact\, the famous artist’s systematic engagement with ceramics began in 1946 in Vallauris\, while on vacation there. In this village in the South of France\, Picasso met the owners of the ‘Madoura’ pottery workshop\, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. The couple had reopened an old ceramic workshop with a traditional wood-burning kiln. So great was the artist’s excitement with the place and the potential of clay as a material\, that a year later he settled in Vallauris together with his new partner\, Françoise Gilot. This was the beginning of an extremely fruitful collaboration with the Ramié couple\, who actually put both their workshop and artisans at the disposal of the artist. Thus\, the ideal conditions were created for Picasso to begin experimenting feverishly with the various techniques of clay. \nThe ancient art of pottery\, the malleability and durability of clay as a raw material\, the unpredictable end result\, the combination of arts (painting\, sculpture\, pottery)\, the usability and transformation of clay objects were all elements that fascinated Picasso. At the same time\, the distinctive features of the South of France and Vallauris in particular\, such as the ample space\, the light\, the fragrances of nature and the simplicity of everyday life\, all decisively contributed to the opening of a new and important chapter in the life of the artist. Over the next years and until 1971\, Picasso created an enormous number of original ceramic works\, which exceed 3\,500 in number. \nPicasso believed that the art of ancient civilizations “is not a thing of the past”. In his ceramic works\, the artist evidently uses various shapes\, motifs\, textures and themes from antiquity and mythology\, without copying them\, however. Instead\, he created a whole new reality. From his preparatory sketches to his final works\, one can distinguish influences from the pottery art of ancient cultures\, particularly those of the Mediterranean region. \nThe exhibition\, “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay”\, organized by the Department of Antiquities\, as part of the Picasso Mediterranée programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris\, presents a small but representative part of Picasso’s ceramic creations\, with original and unique works. At the same time\, the exhibition includes Cypriot antiquities\, grouped in such a way as to highlight specific themes\, shapes and motifs of antiquity\, whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso’s works. The visitor is invited to reflect on and sense possible points of encounter and dialogue\, but also common characteristics and traits\, many of which could have developed randomly. \nIndeed\, was Picasso aware of Cypriot antiquities? What is certain is that the artist never visited Cyprus. His work\, however\, entitled “Faces of a Woman”\, which was the spark for this exhibition\, was inspired by a Cypriot clay composite vessel of the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC)\, which is exhibited at the Louvre Museum\, while similar ones are part of the Cyprus Museum collection. Although in the “Faces of a Woman” the comparison with a specific antiquity is evident\, the choice of Cypriot antiquities for the other Picasso works was made in such a way as to bring to the fore the common themes\, the similar motifs\, the uses and the unchanged techniques that one can distinguish in the works of the anonymous creators of antiquity and those of the 20th century eponymous artist. For this reason\, the interest of the exhibition’s curators focused mainly on issues\, such as the masquerading and playing with the bull figure\, the anthropomorphism and zoomorphism of the vessels\, the elaborate and multidimensional handles\, the painted decoration\, the posture of the body and the pictorial scenes on vessels. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Greek and English. \nOpening Hours\nTuesday – Friday: 8.00 – 18.00\nSaturday: 9.00 – 17.00\nSunday: 10.00 – 13.00\nMonday: closed

SUMMARY:Ecopolis Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:Ecopolis returns with another 3-day anti-commercial festival with no sponsors. Just like last year\, admission to all events will be free. \nFrom 19:00 on each day of the festival you can find us at the square where there will be various information desks of activist initiatives and groups. The presentations will start at 20:00. This year’s festival preliminary programme is the following: \n10/07 – “Urban Conflicts in Nicosia: obstacles and potentialities”. Presentation by Ecopolis and discussion. \n11/07 – Presentation: “Unsustainable: Capitalism’s Ecological Plundering”. Discussion with interventions by initiatives for ecology and the city will follow. \n12/07 – Ecopolis_live with Ηead On\, Stonus and The Handmade band. \nMore information on the concert and other musical and visual happenings and interventions will be announced soon! \nDonations help us maintain the festival’s independent and self-funded character\, so they are more than welcome. \nA few words about Ecopolis: \nThe city as the main field of social activity and action reflects the wider social environment. Ecopolis festival aims to reveal\, challenge\, and renegotiate the social tensions of everyday life in the streets\, squares and benches of Nicosia. A city that is drowning in coffee shops\, street-side tables and fashionable bars. The old city of Nicosia has changed face: from sub-developed historical center it has now fulfilled its potential as an ideal city-commodity\, maintaining the advertisable image of the “last divided capital”\, while the accelerated gentrification of the last years has constituted it as an urban jewel “clean” from social relations and situations that oppose commodity relations mediated by spectacle. \nSkyscrapers for high-class apartments and businesses\, pedestrian zones occupied by the tables of countless interchangeable shops\, the lack of public benches\, fences around Faneromeni church that get taller every year\, sidewalks full of parked cars\, sky-rocketing rents that become prohibitive for migrant residents –all a result of gentrification and the consumerist influx which followed\, creating a city where the only acceptable social / political activity is consumption. Meanwhile\, barbed wire\, barrels and armies force us us to live our geographical and historic site as half\, mediated by the symbols of hatred and tedious queues at the checkpoints to walk a distance of 100 meters. \nFor us\, these are factors composing a challenging landscape of action\, in which we intervene creatively by expressing and making proposals for societies organized outside hierarchical\, capitalist and sexist mentalities and institutions\, on the basis of self-organization\, solidarity and companionship. The Ecopolis festival is being held this year for the first time by the Ecopolis working group on ecology and the city. Ecopolis festival aims to put forth the claim to the city as a Common\, as a field of resistance to the social and environmental endeavors of neoliberalism. We want to create the conditions in which the city is experienced as a point of reference and socialization\, action and experimentation\, rather than as a polished real estate commodity bought and sold according to the laws of the market and current trends.
