DESCRIPTION:World War II has been the deadliest conflict in human history\, the “point zero” of European and global civilization. Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. SUMMARY:Picasso at the Cyprus Museum - Works in Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities announces the organization of the exhibition “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay” \n12 June – 8 September 2019 \nAt the mature age of sixty-five\, Pablo Picasso developed a passion for ceramic art\, which became one of his main forms of expression until the end of his life. In fact\, the famous artist’s systematic engagement with ceramics began in 1946 in Vallauris\, while on vacation there. In this village in the South of France\, Picasso met the owners of the ‘Madoura’ pottery workshop\, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. The couple had reopened an old ceramic workshop with a traditional wood-burning kiln. So great was the artist’s excitement with the place and the potential of clay as a material\, that a year later he settled in Vallauris together with his new partner\, Françoise Gilot. This was the beginning of an extremely fruitful collaboration with the Ramié couple\, who actually put both their workshop and artisans at the disposal of the artist. Thus\, the ideal conditions were created for Picasso to begin experimenting feverishly with the various techniques of clay. \nThe ancient art of pottery\, the malleability and durability of clay as a raw material\, the unpredictable end result\, the combination of arts (painting\, sculpture\, pottery)\, the usability and transformation of clay objects were all elements that fascinated Picasso. At the same time\, the distinctive features of the South of France and Vallauris in particular\, such as the ample space\, the light\, the fragrances of nature and the simplicity of everyday life\, all decisively contributed to the opening of a new and important chapter in the life of the artist. Over the next years and until 1971\, Picasso created an enormous number of original ceramic works\, which exceed 3\,500 in number. \nPicasso believed that the art of ancient civilizations “is not a thing of the past”. In his ceramic works\, the artist evidently uses various shapes\, motifs\, textures and themes from antiquity and mythology\, without copying them\, however. Instead\, he created a whole new reality. From his preparatory sketches to his final works\, one can distinguish influences from the pottery art of ancient cultures\, particularly those of the Mediterranean region. \nThe exhibition\, “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay”\, organized by the Department of Antiquities\, as part of the Picasso Mediterranée programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris\, presents a small but representative part of Picasso’s ceramic creations\, with original and unique works. At the same time\, the exhibition includes Cypriot antiquities\, grouped in such a way as to highlight specific themes\, shapes and motifs of antiquity\, whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso’s works. The visitor is invited to reflect on and sense possible points of encounter and dialogue\, but also common characteristics and traits\, many of which could have developed randomly. \nIndeed\, was Picasso aware of Cypriot antiquities? What is certain is that the artist never visited Cyprus. His work\, however\, entitled “Faces of a Woman”\, which was the spark for this exhibition\, was inspired by a Cypriot clay composite vessel of the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC)\, which is exhibited at the Louvre Museum\, while similar ones are part of the Cyprus Museum collection. Although in the “Faces of a Woman” the comparison with a specific antiquity is evident\, the choice of Cypriot antiquities for the other Picasso works was made in such a way as to bring to the fore the common themes\, the similar motifs\, the uses and the unchanged techniques that one can distinguish in the works of the anonymous creators of antiquity and those of the 20th century eponymous artist. For this reason\, the interest of the exhibition’s curators focused mainly on issues\, such as the masquerading and playing with the bull figure\, the anthropomorphism and zoomorphism of the vessels\, the elaborate and multidimensional handles\, the painted decoration\, the posture of the body and the pictorial scenes on vessels. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Greek and English. \nOpening Hours\nTuesday – Friday: 8.00 – 18.00\nSaturday: 9.00 – 17.00\nSunday: 10.00 – 13.00\nMonday: closed

DESCRIPTION:The summer’s…coolest breeze blows at the wind instrument celebrating Festival in Katydata. For the sixth consecutive year it takes on a different look in music tradition. \nThe winds are once again taking a starring role in contemporary music creation\, drawing inspiration from world music traditions\, as Windcraft Music Fest returns to Katydata\, over the weekend of 10-11 August 2019. This year’s event however\, aims at hitting a higher note\, as street arts will be taking a prominent role in the Fest’ six edition programme. \nWhile harmonically combining traditional and modern arts\, Windcraft Music Fest has turned into an institution with the main aim of promoting the remarkable work of Cypriot and foreign artists and encouraging their cooperation\, while seeking to interactively include its visitors in the process of musical creation. The ultimate goal of the event is to revive the wider rural region of Solea\, situated in the mid-western parts of Cyprus\, by… blowing a wind of artistic creation and high energy from the urban centers to the island’s countryside. \nBy pursuing the conviction that art is not simply found onstage but also in every corner of our lives\, this year’s event is especially turning its focus on street arts. Next to an international line-up of bands that will perform on stage\, get ready to experience music\, dance and visual arts in every corner of the village. Moreover\, the Festival’s programme includes workshops\, screenings\, theatrical plays for children and other activities which will invite each and every visitor to act\, explore and exchange experiences and enjoy the wonderful process of artistic creation. \nThis year’s line-up promises to deliver moments of magic and spontaneous body movement and expression. A number of bands\, who are mixing music traditions of the world with modern sounds will appear at the Festival’s three idyllic stages; at the Inn\, the Garden and the Square. \nFrench band ‘Ndiaz with roots from the region of Britany are making “acoustic trance” with Brazilian\, Middle Eastern and Indian music elements\, while The Khat are reviving Yemen’s music tradition with Arab and Jewish lyrics\, dressed with sounds coming out of modern\, partially handmade\, music instruments. Bunta Planedo will be inviting you to dance on electronic covers of well-known songs from Greece and the Balkans. Agios Lavrentios Brass Band’s will be lifting up your spirits with a fusion of Balkan and New Orleans melodies\, while Nicolas Tryfonos Quintet will be taking you on a trip to the E. Mediterranean\, with a jazz soundtrack. \nAlso\, a special occasion to this year’s line-up are the three new collaborations of Cypriot bands with foreign musicians. Guitarist Odysseas Toumazou’s trio will be joining forces with the innovative EWI and sax player\, Itai Weissman\, for a show that will take the form of an album presentation of their debut album Ensticto. Latin jazz band Macumba\, who recently collaborated with percussionist Nils Fischer in studio\, during the recording of their album Como Jugando\, will also be taking the stage. \nFinally\, duet LARVA\, which is creating new sounds while drawing inspiration by Cypriot folk music\, will be sharing the stage with sax player\, Federico Pascucci. Setting the tone early on in the Festival will be Windcraft Band and Batukinio\, who with their wind instruments and percussions\, respectively\, have been assigned with the role of launching this year’s event. \nMeanwhile\, Windcraft is expanding its activities outside of the confines of the Solea valley district\, as this year\, the organization has forged a new partnership with Rialto Theatre of Limassol\, and will be organizing a residency for professional wind musicians and percussionists in the context of the Rialto World Music Festival. The residency will be held in the Limassol District village of Lofou\, up in Troodos\, in the period between July 28 and August 1\, with New Zealander sax player Hayden Chisholm as the coordinator. The creative fruits of this residency will also be presented at the Windcraft Music Fest. \nThis year’s Windcraft Music Fest is inviting you to lose yourselves over music’s spells and be charmed by the sound of the winds. DESCRIPTION:Cyprus Astronomy Organisation invites you on Saturday 10 August 2019 to our established annual Music n’ Stars event at the Troodos Botanical Gardens in Amiantos. \nIn a place filled with the smell of herbs accompanied by atmospheric music by DJ Taki Christodoulidis and below the starry sky\, we will watch the spectacular phenomenon of the Perseid meteor shower. \nThis year the Perseids will be in a period close to the Full Moon and the dark sky of the area helps to see the phenomenon better. \nThe Cyprus Astronomy Organization has chosen Saturday as the best day of observation where the density of meteors and the Moon will be in a smaller phase.
