SUMMARY:1940 | People and Images. Cyprus - Greece
DESCRIPTION:World War II has been the deadliest conflict in human history\, the “point zero” of European and global civilization. Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. Featured in the context of the exhibition is Dimitris Vattis’ photography project “The War’s Forgotten”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Catherine Loui Nikita\, Director of BPR Cultural Management. \nThe President of the Republic of Cyprus will inaugurate the exhibition on Tuesday\, 9 April 2019\, at 19:00 \nDuration: 10.04.19 – 31.12.19\nVisiting hours: Mon – Sun 10:00-19:00 \n86-90 Faneromenis Str.\, Old Nicosia \nT: 22128157

SUMMARY:Metamorphosis\, Belgian Art 1860-1930
DESCRIPTION:The new temporary exhibition of A. G. Leventis Gallery is dedicated to the leaders of Belgian Impressionism as well as to the movements that developed after them. Selected works from Museums and private collections from Belgium\, Greece and Cyprus\, showcase the evolution of Belgian Impressionism\, from mid-19th to the beginning of 20th century. The exhibition is a retrospective to Belgian Impressionists and the group which\, in their attempt to reclaim some of the limelight from their more famous French counterparts\, have discovered unique ways in handling light\, emphasising on ‘sensation’ rather than ‘impression’. \nThe exhibition will focus on the movement’s most celebrated exponents\, bringing together works from leading Belgian museums\, but also treasures from celebrated private collections\, many hitherto unseen and unpublished. Following on from the precursors of Realism in Belgium\, such as Hippolyte Boulenger and Charles Hermans\, the exhibition will dwell on the flourishing of plein-air painting in Belgium in the late 19th century\, through works by Félicien Rops\, Théo van Rysselberghe\, Guillaume Vogels and James Ensor\, among others. It will trace the spirit of thriving artistic circles\, such as La Chrysalide and Les XX\, and present the poetic nocturnes of Louis Artan and the intensity of Isidore Verheyden’s landscapes alongside the dazzling skies of Pericles Pantazis – the only Greek in this intimate circle of Belgian Impressionists. \nCurators: \nEvita Arapoglou\, Curator of the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery \nConstantin Ekonomides\, Art Historian \nMyrto Hatzaki\, Curator of the Paris Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery \nOpening Hours\nDaily except Tuesday 10:00 – 17:00\nWednesday: 10:00 – 22:00\nClosed on Tuesdays and public holidays

SUMMARY:The holiday trilogy
DESCRIPTION:THOC’s Main Stage presents the play “The holiday trilogy” by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. \nLeonardo and his sister Vittoria are preparing feverishly to depart for the country. Social convention demands that they live a life of luxury\, yet their debts are so great that this has become an impossibility. They cannot afford to go\, but how can Leonardo stay behind when his beloved Giacinta is also leaving for the summer accompanied by a handsome young rival? Their expensive sojourn in the country makes their financial problems even worse and will ultimately force them to compromise. \nWith humour and sly irony\, Goldoni castigates the passion with which his fellow-countrymen assert their status through luxury vacations\, describing it as “madness and folly”. Since the mid-18th century\, when The holiday trilogy was written\, it is a type of behaviour that has changed little\, undermining the dignity and humility of human existence. \nDirected by Takis Tzamargias \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:Accordion Virtuosi of Russia
DESCRIPTION:The famous Accordion Ensemble from St. Petersburg belongs to international first-class orchestras. With its outstanding soloists it presents a thrilling musical firework of classic\, rock and folk-music. In the metropole of bajan – and accordion virtuosi – today known as St. Petersburg – the orchestra was founded in 1943 by Pavel Ivanovitsch Smirnov. The tradition of conductors is continued in the 3rd generation by his sons professors Yury and Vladimir Smirnov and by his grandson Yaroslav. As an orchestra of superlatives it has received numerous international prices and is honored as such. It is not a coincidence that Russian president’s continue to fortify its exceptional position. For example it was declared as Russian representative for the Olympic Games and as an official symbol of Russian culture. Many notable composers\, among them Dimitry Shostakovich and Aram Kachaturjan\, acknowledge its extraordinary quality and play an important role in supporting and promoting the orchestra. For each concert the conductors are inspired by the musical message of the Russian soul and choose the appropriate pieces spontaneously. The orchestra carries off with its endless possibilities of expressional sound into a musical dream – into an unforgettable musical experience. For the great enjoyment of symphonic sonority\, wide dynamic spectrum and virtuoso brilliance without sensing frontiers of its musical capacity the orchestra always reaps storms of enthusiasm. \nConductor: VLADIMIR SMIRNOV \nArtistic Director: YURY SMIRNOV \nTickets: www.soldoutticketbox.com/
