SUMMARY:Metamorphosis\, Belgian Art 1860-1930
DESCRIPTION:The new temporary exhibition of A. G. Leventis Gallery is dedicated to the leaders of Belgian Impressionism as well as to the movements that developed after them. Selected works from Museums and private collections from Belgium\, Greece and Cyprus\, showcase the evolution of Belgian Impressionism\, from mid-19th to the beginning of 20th century. The exhibition is a retrospective to Belgian Impressionists and the group which\, in their attempt to reclaim some of the limelight from their more famous French counterparts\, have discovered unique ways in handling light\, emphasising on ‘sensation’ rather than ‘impression’. \nThe exhibition will focus on the movement’s most celebrated exponents\, bringing together works from leading Belgian museums\, but also treasures from celebrated private collections\, many hitherto unseen and unpublished. Following on from the precursors of Realism in Belgium\, such as Hippolyte Boulenger and Charles Hermans\, the exhibition will dwell on the flourishing of plein-air painting in Belgium in the late 19th century\, through works by Félicien Rops\, Théo van Rysselberghe\, Guillaume Vogels and James Ensor\, among others. It will trace the spirit of thriving artistic circles\, such as La Chrysalide and Les XX\, and present the poetic nocturnes of Louis Artan and the intensity of Isidore Verheyden’s landscapes alongside the dazzling skies of Pericles Pantazis – the only Greek in this intimate circle of Belgian Impressionists. \nCurators: \nEvita Arapoglou\, Curator of the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery \nConstantin Ekonomides\, Art Historian \nMyrto Hatzaki\, Curator of the Paris Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery \nOpening Hours\nDaily except Tuesday 10:00 – 17:00\nWednesday: 10:00 – 22:00\nClosed on Tuesdays and public holidays

SUMMARY:The holiday trilogy
DESCRIPTION:THOC’s Main Stage presents the play “The holiday trilogy” by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. \nLeonardo and his sister Vittoria are preparing feverishly to depart for the country. Social convention demands that they live a life of luxury\, yet their debts are so great that this has become an impossibility. They cannot afford to go\, but how can Leonardo stay behind when his beloved Giacinta is also leaving for the summer accompanied by a handsome young rival? Their expensive sojourn in the country makes their financial problems even worse and will ultimately force them to compromise. \nWith humour and sly irony\, Goldoni castigates the passion with which his fellow-countrymen assert their status through luxury vacations\, describing it as “madness and folly”. Since the mid-18th century\, when The holiday trilogy was written\, it is a type of behaviour that has changed little\, undermining the dignity and humility of human existence. \nDirected by Takis Tzamargias \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:Hypersurfacing
DESCRIPTION:NiMAC (The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre\, associated with the Pierides Foundation)\, organises and presents “hypersurfacing”— a project curated by Marina Christodoulidou. \nOn the occasion of the 25th anniversary of NiMAC\, the project seeks to showcase the plurality of practices among Cypriot contemporary artists\, and will unfold via two platforms: an exhibition and a forum. \nThe exhibition\, opening on 29 November 2019\, will present new body of work by twelve Cypriot contemporary artists: Raissa Angeli\, Peter Eramian\, Stelios Kallinikou\, Lito Kattou\, Phanos Kyriacou\, Orestis Lazouras\, Nayia Savva\, Constantinos Taliotis\, Maria Toumazou\, Leontios Toumpouris\, Marina Xenofontos\, Natalie Yiaxi. \nStarting in early November\, the forum will involve a group of international curators who\, in collaboration with the participating artists\, will attempt to activate a space for creative exchanges and meetings. Curators Ioanna Gerakide\, Ryan Inouye\, Katarina Kostandinović\, Luca Lo Pinto\, Salma Tuqan\, and Andrés Valtierra will be participating in the forum. A series of events will be open to the public. \nFeaturing photography\, film\, sculpture\, sound\, text\, installations\, and spatial compositions\, the exhibition evolves around the concept of the surface\, foregrounding its inherent presence in the work of the artists. \nAccording to the curator\, “surface is understood here as a site of emergence\, where material and conceptual exchanges enable artists to articulate thoughts. It stands as the most directly apparent aspect of our environment\, material or immaterial\, and emerges\, hence\, as a process of becoming perceptible. The state of being hyper\, on the other hand\, presupposes a mode of over-being. And when it meets the surface\, the hyper opens up to possibilities beyond materiality and signification.” \nTaking the notion of the hypersurface as a starting point\, the exhibition sets out to explore the prospects that arise when one witnesses an event or a process of anticipation. To do so\, the artists have posited the hypersurface in their own areas of interest and research\, and delved into subjects ranging from natural and urban landscapes to autobiographical and imaginary relationships\, material and immaterial studies\, fact and fiction. Hence\, the works presented in the exhibition are both a response to and—in many ways—a reverberation of the concept of the hypersurface. \nThe project will be accompanied by a publication featuring essays by Misal Adnan\, Marina Christodoulidou\, Eoin Dara\, Ioanna Gerakide\, Mattia Giussani\, Ryan Inouye\, Jesi Khadivi\, Carlos Kong\, Katarina Kostandinović\, Luca Lo Pinto\, Francis McKee\, Ceel Mogami de Haas\, Edwin Nasr\, Yiannis Toumazis\, Andrés Valtierra and Andreas Vrahimis. \nForum \nSaturday\, 16 November 2019\, 11:00: Talk by Luca Lo Pinto (English) \nWednesday\, 27 November 2019\, 19:00: Talk by Katarina Kostandinović (English) \nSaturday\, 30 November 2019\, 16:00: Artists’ talks\, moderated by Ioanna Gerakide (Greek) \nFriday\, 13 December 2019\, 19:00: Talk by Andrés Valtierra (English) \nThursday\, 23 January 2020\, 19:00: Talk by Natascha Sadr Haghighian\, moderated by Ryan Inouye (English) – at Theatro Polis OPAP \nSaturday\, 29 February 2020\, 11:00: Talk by Salma Tuqan & book launch (English) \nFurther events\, guided tours\, and educational programs to be announced. \nExhibition\nOpening: 29 November 2019\, 19:00\nDuration: 29 November 2019 – 29 February 2020 \nForum\n5 November – 29 February 2020 \nOpening hours:\nTuesday – Saturday\, 10:00 – 21:00

SUMMARY:Evelyn Anastasiou | A Well-Tempered Clavier
DESCRIPTION:Eins gallery is pleased to present Evelyn Anastasiou’s solo exhibition entitled A Well-Tempered Clavier. \nProbing the intersections of visual and sonic elements as these affect our perceptions of history and processes of subjectivation\, culture and spirituality\, Evelyn Anastasiou invites us to experience things synaesthetically. If we think (about) this room as if we “suffer” from this neurological trait that results in a joining or merging of senses\, activating sensual\, linguistic and impersonal intensities into the direction of a vital materialism\, we might reach a space where all boundaries are perforated and where sense and feeling interact with representations and materialites with a mood for intervention; as a desire to redistribute elements in both time and space. \nAnastasiou creates a spatial symphony through an allegoric chain\, with references to 1971\, the year in which ‘The Magic Flute’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was first presented\, and 1958\, when Benjamin Britten presented ‘Noye’s Fludde’\, an opera intended primarily for amateur performers\, particularly children. The two compositions are connected through a mystical tone and the use of music as an element of spiritual progress\, escape and survival. The artist’s research led to her gaining access from the Berlin State Library to the original notation for ‘The Magic Flute’. There\, she discovered a series of “mistakes” – parts of musical writing that Mozart chose not to include in the final result and were thus never released: that is\, the material that matches their graphic representation was never ‘imprinted’ on the ears of the public. The few “mistakes” are now the basis for the production of a new partiture and a sound piece which\, like a fragmented and unruly footnote of the opera to which it constitutes an anachronistic parergon\, it transfers the sound of (an emotional) dissonance from the end of the 18th century to today. The silent substance is carried as a cry\, an instinctual reaction that creates an aesthetic of (social) anger\, a political act which\, with an anarchic mood\, opens up a space for the awakening of “harmonious” provisions. \nI add to this chain the year 1739\, when David Hume released the “Treatise on Human nature”\, where he likens the human brain to a fragile and crack-filled boat which has to be dumped into “the open sea of human nature” in order to “complete a journey around the world”. The Prussian blue of Anastasiou’s wood carvings positions us in this open sea. The children’s faces that are discerned on the woodcarvings\, inspired by documentation from Britten’s staging and printed on surfaces primed as if they would host visual hagiographies of saints\, are joined by Mozart’s deleted music in order to create unorthodox blueprints that touch upon questions around the meaning of experience\, the ways in which time can be understood as something beyond a chronologically intended evolutionary process\, and the revaluation of the ways in which our senses and feelings help us process the unfamiliarity we feel against the flow of history\, inviting us to a reimagining of the space ‘between the lines’. \nExperiencing the weight of the processes that determine a lot of what we recognise today as “naturally evident”\, disregarding the hagiographic tone of nostalgia\, the relations between sound and colour become an element for analysing the culturally stabilising currency of the division of the senses (why do we favour the evidence of sight instead of sight in conjunction with hearing?)\, a tool of expression (how can timbre and hue create or express any sort of feeling?) and an effort to attune tonalities and frequencies (how do we approach and live with “the other?”). \nEvagoras Vanezis\nArt’s Writer and Curator \nOpening: December 13th\, 19:00 – 23:00 \nExhibition duration: 13.12.2019 – 18.01.2020 \nOpening Hours\nWednesday – Friday: 16:00 – 20:00\nSaturday: 11:00 – 16:00

SUMMARY:The Servant of Two Masters
DESCRIPTION:Satiriko Theatro presents “The Servant of Two Masters”\, a comedy by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni\, adapted and directed by Marianna Kafkaridou. \nThe Servant of Two Masters (Il servitore di due padroni) is a classic Italian comedy in the Commedia dell’Arte tradition\, focussing on the attempts of the resourceful and ever-hungry Truffaldino to serve two different masters without either of them finding out. \nIt was written in 1745 at the request of actor Antonio Sacco\, one of the great Truffaldinos in history\, and first performed in Milan as a ‘scenario’ in which only the lovers’ dialogues were fully scripted. Later it moved into the Teatro San Samuele\, Venice\, for the season 1745-46. A full version was eventually published in 1753. \n(in Greek)
