DESCRIPTION:Live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera \nMadama Butterfly\, broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera\, is a breathtaking production directed by Anthony Minghella and conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi. \nWorld premiere: Teatro alla Scala\, Milan\, 1904. Met premiere: February 11\, 1907. The title character of Madama Butterfly—a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage—is one of the defining roles in opera. The story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism for people far removed from the opera house\, and film\, Broadway\, and popular culture in general have riffed endlessly on it. The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score\, especially the music for the thoroughly believable lead role\, has made Butterfly timeless. \nCreators: Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was immensely popular in his own lifetime\, and his mature works remain staples in the repertory of most of the world’s opera companies. His librettists for Madama Butterfly\, Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica\, had also collaborated with the composer on his previous two operas\, Tosca and La Bohème. Giacosa\, a dramatist\, was responsible for the stories and Illica\, a poet\, worked primarily on the words themselves. \nSettings: The opera takes place in the Japanese port city of Nagasaki at the turn of the last century\, at a time of expanding American international presence. Japan was hesitantly defining its global role\, and Nagasaki was one of the country’s few ports open to foreign ships. Temporary marriages for foreign sailors were not unusual. \nMusic: Puccini achieved a new level of sophistication with his use of the orchestra in this score\, with subtle colorings and sonorities throughout. But the opera rests squarely on the performer of the title role: On stage for most of the time\, Cio-Cio-San is the only character that experiences true (and tragic) development. The singer must convey an astounding array of emotions and characteristics\, from ethereal to fleshly to intelligent to dreamy-bordering-on-insane\, to resigned in the final scene.

Seventy five children from Nicosia and Larnaca will be joined by Windcraft Junior Band to showcase their talent and achievements through a musical program that will offer the audience some beautiful music and great inspiration. The concert will take place on Wednesday June 12th at 18:30 at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation’s Open Air Theatre in Faneromeni\, Nicosia. \nThe concert is organized under the auspices of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus as part of its activities on the occasion of this World Refugee Day. With the slogan “Join us and take a step #WithRefugees” the concert aims to send a ‘loud musical’ message calling for the respect\, acceptance and integration of refugees into the new societies. Across the world\, institutions and individual people from all different socio-economic levels\, take small or big steps in solidarity with refugees. Inspired by the actions of so many others\, we invite each and every one of you to take a step and support refugees in any way you can on this World Refugee Day. \nThe orchestra\, under the artistic and musical direction of Petros Stylianou\, promises to take the audience on a musical journey through rhythms and melodies from around the world and especially from Latin America.\nAdmission at the concert is free of charge and we would be honored if you joined us in our cause. The audience will also have the opportunity to make a donation to Sistema Cyprus on the day\, supporting its efforts to bring social change through music. \nAbout UNHCR\nUNHCR was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950 to help millions of refugees in the aftermath of World War II. We advocate for Cyprus’ accession to the UN Conventions for the prevention of statelessness and the protection of stateless persons. \nAbout Sistema Cyprus\nSistema Cyprus is a music and social program inspired by El Sistema of Venezuela that aims to provide all children and young people with free music education through orchestras and choirs. The second aim is to promote respect and recognition of vulnerable population groups in each society. DESCRIPTION:Torleif Thedéen\, is one of the most celebrated cellists of our time. She is visiting Cyprus for the first time\, to join forces with the eminent German pianist Elisaveta Blumina in a fascinating cello and piano recital\, as a part of the pharos Arts Foundation’s Concert & Recital Series. \nHaving gained a global recognition in 1985 by winning 3 of the world’s most prestigious cello competitions\, Thedéen has since appeared as a musician not solely with all the leading orchestras in Scandinavia but also with several of the world’s greatest orchestras\, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Bordeaux and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin\, under the baton of such conductors as Paavo Berglund\, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Neeme Järvi. An ECHO Klassik award winner\, Blumina has released over 25 albums\, which have been received by the press and earned her a reputation as an amazing musician. DESCRIPTION:The 2nd concert under the title “Cypriots’ Sounds” that takes place within the 7th New Music festival of the Centre of Cypriot Composers is a reality. \nSavvas Savvas\, president of the Centre of Cypriot Composers told us regarding this new collaboration of the Centre with the CySO Foundation: \n“It is with great pleasure and joy that the Cyprus symphony orchestra can participate for the 2nd consecutive year in our annual\, well-established festival to present premieres of contemporary music for symphony orchestra by Cypriot composers. The New Music festival is organized in collaboration with the Centre of Music research\, Innovation and International Networking and the Cultural Services of the MoEC. \nThe Centre of Cypriot Composers aims to ensure the continuation of this festival as well as to further its collaboration with the CySO in other concerts that will involve Cypriot creators.
