SUMMARY:Sistema in Concert - World Refugee Day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sistema Cyprus’ orchestra is preparing to draw everyone back into its rhythm at its upcoming concert which is dedicated to the World Refugee Day. Seventy five children from Nicosia and Larnaca will be joined by Windcraft Junior Band to showcase their talent and achievements through a musical program that will offer the audience some beautiful music and great inspiration. The concert will take place on Wednesday June 12th at 18:30 at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation’s Open Air Theatre in Faneromeni\, Nicosia. \nThe concert is organized under the auspices of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus as part of its activities on the occasion of this World Refugee Day. With the slogan “Join us and take a step #WithRefugees” the concert aims to send a ‘loud musical’ message calling for the respect\, acceptance and integration of refugees into the new societies. Across the world\, institutions and individual people from all different socio-economic levels\, take small or big steps in solidarity with refugees. Inspired by the actions of so many others\, we invite each and every one of you to take a step and support refugees in any way you can on this World Refugee Day. \nThe orchestra\, under the artistic and musical direction of Petros Stylianou\, promises to take the audience on a musical journey through rhythms and melodies from around the world and especially from Latin America.\nAdmission at the concert is free of charge and we would be honored if you joined us in our cause. The audience will also have the opportunity to make a donation to Sistema Cyprus on the day\, supporting its efforts to bring social change through music. \nAbout UNHCR\nUNHCR was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950 to help millions of refugees in the aftermath of World War II. We work to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country\, having fled persecution or war at home. We help to build better futures for refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people\, many of whom have nobody left to turn to.\nIn Cyprus\, UNHCR opened an office in 1974 to organise and coordinate humanitarian assistance for the displaced populations in both communities. Today\, UNHCR’s primary objective is to assist the Government to further develop and improve its asylum legislation\, procedures and capacities for a refugee protection system fully in line with international standards. We seek to ensure respect for refugee rights and acceptable standards of treatment of asylum-seekers\, particularly as regards access to asylum procedures\, reception conditions and freedom of movement. We promote good practices in relation to policies and measures that support the effective integration of refugees into the social\, economic and cultural fabric of Cypriot society. We advocate for Cyprus’ accession to the UN Conventions for the prevention of statelessness and the protection of stateless persons. \nAbout Sistema Cyprus\nSistema Cyprus is a music and social program inspired by El Sistema of Venezuela that aims to provide all children and young people with free music education through orchestras and choirs. The second aim is to promote respect and recognition of vulnerable population groups in each society. DESCRIPTION:Torleif Thedéen\, is one of the most celebrated cellists of our time. She is visiting Cyprus for the first time\, to join forces with the eminent German pianist Elisaveta Blumina in a fascinating cello and piano recital\, as a part of the pharos Arts Foundation’s Concert & Recital Series. \nHaving gained a global recognition in 1985 by winning 3 of the world’s most prestigious cello competitions\, Thedéen has since appeared as a musician not solely with all the leading orchestras in Scandinavia but also with several of the world’s greatest orchestras\, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Bordeaux and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin\, under the baton of such conductors as Paavo Berglund\, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Neeme Järvi. DESCRIPTION:Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings Puccini’s gun-slinging heroine in this romantic epic of the Wild West\, with the heralded return of tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the role of the outlaw she loves. Tenor Yusif Eyvazov also sings some performances. Baritone Željko Lučić is the vigilante sheriff Jack Rance\, and Marco Armiliato conducts. \nWorld Premiere: Metropolitan Opera\, New York\, 1910. Puccini’s “American” opera\, based on David Belasco’s play The Girl of the Golden West\, had its glamorous and highly publicized world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera\, with the composer in the audience. The drama is set during the California Gold Rush\, and the girl of the title is one of Puccini’s most appealing heroines—a strong\, independent woman determined to win the man she loves. Although it fell out of favor with audiences for a few decades following its original success\, Fanciulla has rebounded in popularity in recent years and is now counted among Puccini’s best works. \nGiacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was immensely popular in his own lifetime\, and his mature works remain staples in the repertory of most of the world’s opera companies. His operas are celebrated for their mastery of detail\, sensitivity to everyday subjects\, copious melody\, and economy of expression. For the libretto of Fanciulla\, Puccini’s publisher recommended the services of Carlo Zangarini (1874–1943)\, whose mother came from Colorado and who was fluent in English. Puccini found much of Zangarini’s work “truly beautiful” but was frustrated by how slowly he worked\, so the author and journalist Guelfo Civinini (1873–1954) was brought in to collaborate. The source play\, The Girl of the Golden West\, was written and produced on Broadway by the American impresario David Belasco (1853–1931)\, who was also the author and producer of Madame Butterfly\, which Puccini set just before Fanciulla. \nCOMPOSER: Giacomo Puccini\nPRODUCTION: Giancarlo del Monaco\nSET & COSTUME DESIGNER: Michael Scott\nLIGHTING DESIGNER: Gil Wechsler\nREVIVAL STAGE DIRECTOR: Gregory Keller \nSetting: The opera unfolds in the mountains of California during the Gold Rush in 1849–50. The anachronistic presence of a Pony Express rider and a Wells Fargo agent would indicate a date after 1860\, but historical accuracy is not the goal in this tale. Puccini was enchanted with Belasco’s fictional setting\, with its combination of mythic and grittily realistic elements. \nMusic: With his international stature assured\, Puccini explored new musical horizons in Fanciulla: There are few arias (the tenor’s Act III “Ch’ella mi creda” being a standout exception)\, and most of the music relies on changes of tone and color instead of set pieces. The orchestral sweep\, appropriate to the dramatic landscape of the California mountains\, is apparent in the first bars of the brief\, explosive prelude. As in Tosca and Madama Butterfly\, local musical elements are depicted for color\, albeit sparingly.
