SUMMARY:Doctor Glas
DESCRIPTION:A play based on the epistolary novel “Doctor Glas” by Hjalmar Söderberg\, which tells the story of a physician in 19th-century Sweden who deals with moral and love issues. \nThe story is told in the form of a diary and follows Doctor Glas as he struggles with depression. The antagonist is Reverend Gregorius\, a morally corrupt clergyman. Gregorius’ beautiful young wife confides in Dr. Glas that her sex life is making her miserable and asks for his help. Glas falls in love with her and agrees to help even though she already has another lover. He attempts to intervene\, but the Reverend refuses to give up his “marital rights” — she must have sex with him whether she likes it or not. So\, in order to make his love happy\, he begins to plot her husband’s murder. The novel also deals with issues such as abortion\, women’s rights\, suicide\, euthanasia\, and eugenics. Not surprisingly\, the book triggered a violent campaign against its author who was subsequently vilified in Swedish literary circles. \nAdapted and directed by Stratis Panourios \nTickets: Tickethour.com.cy & ACS Couriers. \nFor more info and reservations call: 97 906 990 \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:Musical Bridges - The Piano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Piano Quartet came out of the need by four pianists to sidestep the loneliness of the solo player\, the solitary long hours of practicing and even the solitude of the stage performance. “This loneliness is something we grow up with but it does not mean we are loners as characters”\, writes the creator of the project Musical Bridges\, Dr. Galina Dimova-Georgieva. There are many examples of great pianists who sought the collaboration with fellow musicians in their career\, Nicolas Economou’s pioneering collaboration “On Four Pianos” in 1983\, being a case in point. Natalia Lezedova\, Nina Ioannidou\, Ivelina Ruseva and Galina Dimova played at a concert during the Winter Music Festival 2017 in Paphos and decided to develop a program with predominantly six and eight hands works instead of the usual solos or duets. Three concerts came out of this idea and Musical Bridges is the third series. \nThe Paphos-based four pianists\, originally come from different backgrounds (Cyprus\, Greece\, Bulgaria and Russia) and the program is compiled so as to reflect this diversity without neglecting the classical repertoire with works by Scriabin and Saint-Saëns. The most eminent Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov is represented with two pieces – the emblematic Bulgarian Rhapsody Vardar and the lyrical Song. The virtuoso Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian and the enigmatic Elegy by Arno Babajanian will introduce the listener to the best Soviet Armenian music. A tribute to the genius of the Cypriot composer Nicolas Economou will be paid with a performance of his Three Pieces for Chick. \nThe Piano Quartet commissioned the Greek composer Dimitiris Tsoukas to arrange a selection of songs by Manos Hadjidakis for eight hands\, which will be performed for the first time. \nGalina Dimova\, Natalia Lezedova\, Nina Ioannidou & Ivelina Ruseva perform compositions by Saint-Saëns\, Scriabin\, Lavignac\, Vladigerov\, Khachaturian\, Babajanian\, Hadjidakis\, Piazzolla\, Cornick\, Economou for solo\, four\, six and eight hands. \nConcert Dates:\n8 November 2019 (Friday)\nRialto Theatre\, Limassol \n10 November 2019 (Sunday)\nMarkideio Theatre\, Paphos \n15 November 2019 (Friday)\nPallas Theatre\, Nicosia \nTime: 20:30 \nTickets: 12/7(students) at the door or in advance:\nLimassol: Rialto Theatre\, tel. 25343900\, rialto.interticket.com\nPaphos: Time Out Kiosk\, Akamantidos 2\, tel: 26949522\nwww.paphosmusiclovers.com\nwww.soldoutticketbox.com\nNicosia: D & Me Kiosk\, Gregoriou Xenopoulou 13\, tel: 96404084\nwww.soldoutticketbox.com

SUMMARY:The holiday trilogy
DESCRIPTION:THOC’s Main Stage presents the play “The holiday trilogy” by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. \nLeonardo and his sister Vittoria are preparing feverishly to depart for the country. Social convention demands that they live a life of luxury\, yet their debts are so great that this has become an impossibility. They cannot afford to go\, but how can Leonardo stay behind when his beloved Giacinta is also leaving for the summer accompanied by a handsome young rival? Their expensive sojourn in the country makes their financial problems even worse and will ultimately force them to compromise. \nWith humour and sly irony\, Goldoni castigates the passion with which his fellow-countrymen assert their status through luxury vacations\, describing it as “madness and folly”. Since the mid-18th century\, when The holiday trilogy was written\, it is a type of behaviour that has changed little\, undermining the dignity and humility of human existence. \nDirected by Takis Tzamargias \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:The Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Fantastiko Theatro presents the play “The Wolves” by Sarah DeLappe which centers on the experiences of high school girls through their weekly Saturday morning pre-game soccer warmups. The play was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. \nThe Wolves is set in an indoor soccer facility. Each scene depicts the nine teenage girls who make up the Wolves\, a soccer team\, warming up before their game each week. \nThe first scene opens with discussion of a murderous Cambodian dictator\, and conversations stem from there. Overlapping dialogue illustrates an atmosphere where each group of girls have their own\, specific conversations while still chiming in on the main topic. These spin-offs include period gossip\, talk of boyfriends\, their coach’s obvious hangovers\, and speculations about the new girl\, #46\, who is said to live in a “yogurt” (a yurt) and repeatedly burst in conversations at the most inappropriate times such as mentioning how the team’s striker\, #7\, had an abortion. \nIn every scene\, the girls are going through a stretching routine led by #25. This is one of the only repetitive actions\, besides #7’s constant use of the word “fuck” and the goalie\, #00\, suffering from social anxiety attacks and consequently running outside to vomit. The girls sometimes continue their gossip from the previous week\, bringing new drama and topics of conversation. #46 slowly begins to fit in and most girls seem to grow more comfortable with each other as the season progresses. \nA ski trip taken by #7 and #14 before the second-to-last game leaves the team suffering from injuries and internal drama. #7 suffers a season-ending injury\, which forces #46 to step up. She excels\, and is even scouted along with two other girls while the rest watch enviously from the sidelines. #7 and #14 bring their ski trip squabble back to the field as well. #14 expresses her anger towards her friend about her neglect during the trip and being left with a strange guy (#7’s boyfriend’s friend). They fight\, and end the day on a terrible note. \nTragedy strikes before the final game after #14 is struck by a car and killed\, which causes #00 to break down in the stadium at night\, but also overcome her anxiety. The others are grieving\, and assume among themselves that the others will ditch the game. With a possible forfeit looming\, it feels as though the Wolves’ season will end on the lowest possible note\, until all of the other girls come to the stadium one by one\, allowing them to play. As they rally together\, #14’s mom suddenly approaches them\, giving them a delirious speech about how they have banded together in spite of everything\, leaving everyone speechless. \nTranslation / Direction: Magdalena Zira \nFor more info and reservations call: 99602428 / 97626798 \n(in Greek)

SUMMARY:Bacchae by Euripides
DESCRIPTION:International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama 2019 \nThe internationally award-winning Izumi Ashizawa collaborates with Cypriot theater company Belacqua Theatre and directs Euripides’ Bacchae\, combining the techniques of Japanese Noh theater and ancient Greek drama. \nIn Bacchae\, Euripides recounts the advent of Dionysus to Thebes in order to impose his worship\, the bacchanalian cult. King Pentheus refuses to accept it\, and Dionysus gets his revenge. He infuses frenzy to the women of Thebes and Pentheus finds a horrid death by his own mother\, Agave. \nThe intercultural production aims to create a new performance language\, juxtaposing the worlds of East and West\, Male and Female\, Instinct and Reason\, while presenting Dionysus as an “idea”\, a concept rather than dialectic\, provocative and elusive. Japanese-inspired acting techniques and aesthetics are utilized in an attempt to represent Dionysus and Bacchae\, as the “Other”\, through the collision of the native and the newcomer\, the resident and the stranger. \n▪ With English surtitles \nTranslation: Yorgos Chimonas \nDirection/Movement direction: Izumi Ashizawa \nSet/Costume design: Elena Katsouri\, Thelma Cassoulidou \nOriginal Music: Ermis Michael \nLighting design: Vasilis Petinaris \nTrailer Creation: Sock Team \nProduction/Communication: Stephanie Polykarpou \nCast: \nPentheus: Giorgos Kyriakou \nChorus of Bacchae women/ Dionysus/ Cadmus/ Tiresias/ First Messenger/ Second Messenger/ Agave: \nNayia Anastasiadou\, Νiki Dragoumi\, Ioanna Kordatou\, Themida Nikolaou\, Loukia Pieridou\, Maria Filippou \nGeneral Info: \nSix productions of ancient Greek drama by distinguished theatre companies from Cyprus\, Greece\, Italy\, Slovenia and Spain participate at the twenty-third edition of the “International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama”\, presenting performances at Ancient Odeon in Paphos\, Curium Ancient Theatre in Limassol and “Skali” Amphitheatre in Aglantzia\, Nicosia. \n▪ Performances start at 21:00 \n▪ Please arrive at the theatre before 20:40* \n*Spectators attending performances at the Curium Ancient Theatre are advised to arrive at least 45 minutes before the performance. \n►Tickets: \nSTEPHANIS stores in all cities \nSOEASY Kiosks in Nicosia\, Larnaca\, Limassol \nTIME OUT Kiosk in Paphos \nIn N Out Kiosk in Paralimni \nOnline: www.soldoutticketbox.com \n►Ticket prices: \n€12 regular \n€6 reduced (Students\, Senior Citizens\, National Guard\, Unemployed) \n€45 Festival pass (per person for attending all six performances) \n€10 group sales (over 10 persons per performance) at ticketing@soldoutticketbox.com \n▪ Info: www.greekdramafest.com

SUMMARY:Dinner with Friends
DESCRIPTION:Dinner with Friends is a play written by Donald Margulies. It received the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. \nPlot Summary\nGabe and Karen\, a happily married\, middle-aged couple\, live in Connecticut. They have been friends with Tom and Beth\, another married couple\, for many years. In fact\, it was Gabe and Karen who introduced their friends in the first place. While having dinner at Gabe and Karen’s home\, Beth tearfully reveals that she is getting a divorce from Tom\, who has been unfaithful. \nTom\, who had been away on business\, finds out that Beth has told their friends about the looming divorce\, and hastens to Gabe and Karen’s home. Tom and Beth had planned to tell their friends about their breakup together\, but Tom now believes that Beth unfairly has presented herself as the wronged party\, and feels he must present his own side of the story. \nThe time flashes back 12 years to a vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard\, when Karen and Gabe introduce Beth to Tom. Over the course of the play\, both couples are seen at different ages and stages of their lives. Tom and Beth’s breakup affects Gabe and Karen\, who first feel compelled to choose sides\, and then begin to question the strength of their own seemingly tranquil marriage. They also begin to see the real meaning behind their friendships with Tom and Beth. \nDirector: Grigoris Valtinos \n(in Greek) \nTickets: www.tickethour.com.cy and all ACS Courier.

SUMMARY:The Trojan Women by Euripides
DESCRIPTION:International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama 2019 \nThe Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica presents the first Slovenian production of Euripides’ tragedy The Trojan Women\, the opening production of this year’s Festival. \nThe universally timeless anti-war tragedy\, with the exceptional direction of Jaša Koceli and Marjuta Slamič in the role of Hecuba\, gathered rave reviews from the Slovenian press and audience\, giving Marjuta Slamič the Tantadruj award as a distinction for her performance (season 2017/2018). \nThe Trojan War is over; the Trojan heroes have fallen; the royal family is decimated; the once glorious city is looted. In a landscape of desolation\, under the ruined walls\, Hecuba – the mother\, the woman\, the queen- together with the women of Troy\, all captives of the Achaeans\, lament over their tribulations and their fate to be led as slaves in the homes of the victors. \nIn Trojan Women\, Euripides expresses a relentless “blame” for the atrocities of war\, condemning the ferocity of man and praises his ability to endure. \n▪ With Greek and English surtitles \nTranslation: Jera Ivanc \nDirection: Jaša Koceli \nDramaturg: Ana Kržišnik Blažica \nLanguage Consultant: Srečko Fišer \nSet design: Darjan Mihajlović Cerar \nCostume design: Branka Pavlič \nComposer: Miha Peric \nRepetiteur: Marta Kosturska \nChoreography: Tajda Podobnik \nPhotography: Mankica Kranjec \nLighting design: Samo Oblokar \nMake-up design: Tina Prpar \nCast: \nPoseidon: Kristijan Guček \nAthena: Helena Peršuh \nHecuba: Marjuta Slamič \nCassandra: Raiven \nAndromache: Patrizia Jurinčič Finžgar \nHelen: Arna Hadžialjević \nTalthybius: Jure Kopušar \nMenelaus: Miha Nemec \nAstyanax: Lev Lipušček \nWarrior: Siniša Bukinac \nChorus Leader of Trojan captives: Ana Facchini \nChorus: Medea Novak\, Vida Fabčič\, Hana Ferizović\, Kati Harej\, Petra Kolenc\, Ajda Podgornik Valič\, Helena Simčič\, Barbara Simčič Veličkov\, Anja Trobec\, Lucija Zorn\, Ana Žnidarčič \nPoet: Farah Chamma \nGeneral Info: \nSix productions of ancient Greek drama by distinguished theatre companies from Cyprus\, Greece\, Italy\, Slovenia and Spain participate at the twenty-third edition of the “International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama”\, presenting performances at Ancient Odeon in Paphos\, Curium Ancient Theatre in Limassol and “Skali” Amphitheatre in Aglantzia\, Nicosia.
