Dozens of nations engaged in combat\, millions of people were killed\, civilians as well as soldiers\, and the largest part of Europe suffered incalculable damage. The map of the Old Continent was redrawn. \nThe Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Embassy of Greece organize for the first time in Cyprus the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”. The exhibition presents primary evidence drawn from historical research into the World War II period\, including the participation of Cyprus and Cypriot volunteers in the fight against the Axis powers as well as significant aspects of the Greek people’s resistance. \nIt collects\, traces and displays people and images as it tells the story of the humble heroes of the war. It is a tribute to the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the 1940 campaign. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities announces the organization of the exhibition “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay” \n12 June – 8 September 2019 \nAt the mature age of sixty-five\, Pablo Picasso developed a passion for ceramic art\, which became one of his main forms of expression until the end of his life. In fact\, the famous artist’s systematic engagement with ceramics began in 1946 in Vallauris\, while on vacation there. In this village in the South of France\, Picasso met the owners of the ‘Madoura’ pottery workshop\, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. The couple had reopened an old ceramic workshop with a traditional wood-burning kiln. So great was the artist’s excitement with the place and the potential of clay as a material\, that a year later he settled in Vallauris together with his new partner\, Françoise Gilot. This was the beginning of an extremely fruitful collaboration with the Ramié couple\, who actually put both their workshop and artisans at the disposal of the artist. Thus\, the ideal conditions were created for Picasso to begin experimenting feverishly with the various techniques of clay. \nThe ancient art of pottery\, the malleability and durability of clay as a raw material\, the unpredictable end result\, the combination of arts (painting\, sculpture\, pottery)\, the usability and transformation of clay objects were all elements that fascinated Picasso. At the same time\, the distinctive features of the South of France and Vallauris in particular\, such as the ample space\, the light\, the fragrances of nature and the simplicity of everyday life\, all decisively contributed to the opening of a new and important chapter in the life of the artist. Over the next years and until 1971\, Picasso created an enormous number of original ceramic works\, which exceed 3\,500 in number. \nPicasso believed that the art of ancient civilizations “is not a thing of the past”. In his ceramic works\, the artist evidently uses various shapes\, motifs\, textures and themes from antiquity and mythology\, without copying them\, however. Instead\, he created a whole new reality. From his preparatory sketches to his final works\, one can distinguish influences from the pottery art of ancient cultures\, particularly those of the Mediterranean region. \nThe exhibition\, “Picasso at the Cyprus Museum. Works in Clay”\, organized by the Department of Antiquities\, as part of the Picasso Mediterranée programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris\, presents a small but representative part of Picasso’s ceramic creations\, with original and unique works. At the same time\, the exhibition includes Cypriot antiquities\, grouped in such a way as to highlight specific themes\, shapes and motifs of antiquity\, whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso’s works. The visitor is invited to reflect on and sense possible points of encounter and dialogue\, but also common characteristics and traits\, many of which could have developed randomly. \nIndeed\, was Picasso aware of Cypriot antiquities? What is certain is that the artist never visited Cyprus. His work\, however\, entitled “Faces of a Woman”\, which was the spark for this exhibition\, was inspired by a Cypriot clay composite vessel of the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC)\, which is exhibited at the Louvre Museum\, while similar ones are part of the Cyprus Museum collection. Although in the “Faces of a Woman” the comparison with a specific antiquity is evident\, the choice of Cypriot antiquities for the other Picasso works was made in such a way as to bring to the fore the common themes\, the similar motifs\, the uses and the unchanged techniques that one can distinguish in the works of the anonymous creators of antiquity and those of the 20th century eponymous artist. For this reason\, the interest of the exhibition’s curators focused mainly on issues\, such as the masquerading and playing with the bull figure\, the anthropomorphism and zoomorphism of the vessels\, the elaborate and multidimensional handles\, the painted decoration\, the posture of the body and the pictorial scenes on vessels. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Greek and English. \nOpening Hours\nTuesday – Friday: 8.00 – 18.00\nSaturday: 9.00 – 17.00\nSunday: 10.00 – 13.00\nMonday: closed

For the sixth consecutive year it takes on a different look in music tradition. \nThe winds are once again taking a starring role in contemporary music creation\, drawing inspiration from world music traditions\, as Windcraft Music Fest returns to Katydata\, over the weekend of 10-11 August 2019. This year’s event however\, aims at hitting a higher note\, as street arts will be taking a prominent role in the Fest’ six edition programme. \nWhile harmonically combining traditional and modern arts\, Windcraft Music Fest has turned into an institution with the main aim of promoting the remarkable work of Cypriot and foreign artists and encouraging their cooperation\, while seeking to interactively include its visitors in the process of musical creation. The ultimate goal of the event is to revive the wider rural region of Solea\, situated in the mid-western parts of Cyprus\, by… blowing a wind of artistic creation and high energy from the urban centers to the island’s countryside. \nBy pursuing the conviction that art is not simply found onstage but also in every corner of our lives\, this year’s event is especially turning its focus on street arts. Next to an international line-up of bands that will perform on stage\, get ready to experience music\, dance and visual arts in every corner of the village. Moreover\, the Festival’s programme includes workshops\, screenings\, theatrical plays for children and other activities which will invite each and every visitor to act\, explore and exchange experiences and enjoy the wonderful process of artistic creation. \nThis year’s line-up promises to deliver moments of magic and spontaneous body movement and expression. A number of bands\, who are mixing music traditions of the world with modern sounds will appear at the Festival’s three idyllic stages; at the Inn\, the Garden and the Square. \nFrench band ‘Ndiaz with roots from the region of Britany are making “acoustic trance” with Brazilian\, Middle Eastern and Indian music elements\, while The Khat are reviving Yemen’s music tradition with Arab and Jewish lyrics\, dressed with sounds coming out of modern\, partially handmade\, music instruments. Bunta Planedo will be inviting you to dance on electronic covers of well-known songs from Greece and the Balkans. Agios Lavrentios Brass Band’s will be lifting up your spirits with a fusion of Balkan and New Orleans melodies\, while Nicolas Tryfonos Quintet will be taking you on a trip to the E. Mediterranean\, with a jazz soundtrack. \nAlso\, a special occasion to this year’s line-up are the three new collaborations of Cypriot bands with foreign musicians. Guitarist Odysseas Toumazou’s trio will be joining forces with the innovative EWI and sax player\, Itai Weissman\, for a show that will take the form of an album presentation of their debut album Ensticto. Latin jazz band Macumba\, who recently collaborated with percussionist Nils Fischer in studio\, during the recording of their album Como Jugando\, will also be taking the stage. \nFinally\, duet LARVA\, which is creating new sounds while drawing inspiration by Cypriot folk music\, will be sharing the stage with sax player\, Federico Pascucci. Setting the tone early on in the Festival will be Windcraft Band and Batukinio\, who with their wind instruments and percussions\, respectively\, have been assigned with the role of launching this year’s event. \nMeanwhile\, Windcraft is expanding its activities outside of the confines of the Solea valley district\, as this year\, the organization has forged a new partnership with Rialto Theatre of Limassol\, and will be organizing a residency for professional wind musicians and percussionists in the context of the Rialto World Music Festival. The residency will be held in the Limassol District village of Lofou\, up in Troodos\, in the period between July 28 and August 1\, with New Zealander sax player Hayden Chisholm as the coordinator. The creative fruits of this residency will also be presented at the Windcraft Music Fest. \nThis year’s Windcraft Music Fest is inviting you to lose yourselves over music’s spells and be charmed by the sound of the winds. During his long-term stay in Spain\, he collaborates with Rubem Dantas\, percussionist of Paco de Lucia and Chick Corea and shows up in big festivals: Jazz Almuñecar\, Espantapitas\, Etnomusic\, Sonderos etc. Significantly renowned in the Spanish music scene\, he records up to 9 albums and plays alongside prestigious musicians such as Diego Guerrero\, Chano Dominguez\, Dan Ben Lior\, Puchero del Hortelano\, Maui etc. In Greece\, he performs in Akropol Theatre and Yakinthia Festival with Oscar de los Reyes\, Eleni Giannopoulou and Christo Tzifaki. In Cyprus he performed in Pattihio Theatre next to the Italian pianist Joe Diverio and records for Andrea’s Georgiou album. Currently\, he is preparing seminars\, projects as well as his own music album. \nGiorgos Morfitis (keyboards): born in Limassol\, started his classical music training from the early age of 6. He gets introduced to Jazz Music at Nakas Music School in Athens\, Greece. Soon after he studies at I.S.A Conservatory of Havana in Cuba\, focusing on classical music composition\, arranging and Jazz / Latin Performance. In 2004 he studies and specializes in Latin Jazz Music at Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam in Holland\, obtaining a B.A and a M.A. In 2012\, he moves to Madrid to teach modern music at Gredos College and Katarina Gurska Conservatory. George has participated in well-known European Festivals such as North Sea Jazz Festival Round Town\, Madrid Jazz Festival\, Paradise Place Jazz Festival\, at the national T.V. of Madrid etc. He finally returns to Cyprus participating regularly in different music projects. \nElias Ioannou (trumpet): was born in Limassol. He has studied at Codarts University in Rotterdam specialising in Jazz Trumpet. He has shown up in concerts all across Europe\, Holland and Cyprus highlighting the North Sea Jazz Rotterdam Festival in which he performs up to three times. In the meanwhile\, he attends several master classes with world famous musicians such as Barry Harris\, Joshua Redman\, Snarky Puppy\, Aaron Parks and gets introduced to Latin Improvisations alongside the great trumpeter Amik Querra. The last years he has been touring within Holland\, recording with different jazz\, latin\, reggae and pop bands. Finally he ends up to his country of origin\, to teach trumpet and work in different musical projects. \nRodos Panagiotou (drums and percussion): is a well- known Cypriot drummer\, coming from a family of musicians. He shows up on stage at the early age of 10. After studying for several years at the Conservatory of Greece and Rotterdam\, he specialises in Latin- Jazz and World Music and sets up the Brazilian Percussion Group Batukinio\, performing for the first time at the opening of Cyprus Small Countries Games. During the last 10 years\, Rodos has been teaching at the European University of Cyprus and University of Nicosia. He has performed with Blue Wire\, New Dimensions and also recorded and toured with well- known composer Andreas Georgiou in Cyprus and Europe. Rodos has collaborated with significantly important musicians such as: Hernan Romero\, Giorgos Dalaras\, Marios Fragkoulis\, Kostas Makedonas\, Debora Meyers\, Pantelis Thalassinos\, Dimitris Mpassis\, Glykeria\, Stratos Kyrpios\, Anagnostakis\, Stefanos Korkollis etc.
