Singapore University of Technology: When will the coronavirus pandemic reach the end?

The evolution of COVID-19 is not entirely coincidental. Like any other pandemic, it follows a specific pattern, from the first cases and the exacerbation of the pandemic to the turning point, the reduction of the cases and the end of the pandemic. That’s according to scientists at Singapore University of Technology, who are trying to answer the big question that concerns most people in the world: When will the coronavirus pandemic reach the end?

The model proposed by the University’s scientists mentions three consecutive dates where the evolution of the virus pandemic is depicted, from the turning point of the cases, to the recording of 97%, 99% and 100% respectively of the new cases in each country.

Although scientists at Singapore University of Technology point out that developments can be altered by various factors each time, however, the methodology they use is based on the measures taken by governments, the acceptance of citizens in isolation measures and distinctive geographical characteristics and can estimate the pattern that the pandemic will follow.

However, as emphasized in the research, the pandemic life cycles vary among countries and there may be different patterns in a specific time frame. For example, on April 21, the Singaporean government announced the extension of the citizens’ restraint measures, while on the same day Italy announced a plan to gradually restart the economy, starting from May 4.

Therefore, based on this methodology and confirmed mathematical models, scientists from Singapore are trying to show at which stage of the pandemic the countries of the world are; and when it is expected to end. However, scientists point out that due to the evolving nature of the pandemic and possible different political approaches from their governments, the pandemic curve, the turning point and the end dates will be constantly reassessed.

According to their analysis, the turning point for the pandemic worldwide was April 11, while on March 30, 97% of cases were recorded and therefore, based on their models, 99% will be recorded on June 17 while and the end of the pandemic is expected on December 9, 2020.

For Cyprus, researchers from Singapore estimate that the turning point was April 5, with 97% of cases recorded on April 29. 99% will be recorded on May 8, while the end of the pandemic for our country is estimated on May 24.

For the rest of Europe, researchers estimate that the end of the pandemic is expected on August 25 for Italy, August 1 for Germany, August 5 for France, August 7 for Spain, July 27 for Belgium and August and September 8 for Netherlands.

The end of the pandemic in the United States is estimated on August 27, for Russia on July 20, while they estimate that the pandemic already ended for China.

Chinese Ambassador relieved to see Cyprus daily COVID-19 cases drop in single digits

Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Huang Xingyuan said on Monday that he was relieved to see COVID-19 cases in Wuhan drop to zero and Cyprus daily cases in single digits.

In a post on his Twitter account, Huang also said that 50k masks donated by sister city Guangzhou have arrived and will be distributed island-wise in the next few days.

“China-Cyprus friendship is built to last forever,” he said, citing a Greek phrase which means that power comes from unity.

Cyprus receives fifth batch of medical consumables from China

Cyprus` Ministry of Health has announced that a fifth batch of medical consumables from China arrived in Cyprus on Thursday evening.

The cargo was on board an Aegean flight fuelled by Hellenic Petroleum.

“This flight was the fifth in a row offered by the two companies, contributing in this way in the Republic of Cyprus` efforts to secure sufficient equipment necessary to manage the coronavirus pandemic,” a Health Ministry press release says.

The fifth batch from China, it adds, includes high protection masks, swaps for collecting samples for testing, shoe covers, which will be distributed in the State Health Services Organisation`s hospitals according to their needs.

Part of the consumables which arrived constitutes a donation of the Embassy of China in Cyprus, the Ministry of Health says, expressing its “warmest thanks.”

Cyprus achieved a miracle in its work to control the pandemic, says the Ambassador of China

Τhe Cypriot government has achieved remarkable results in its work to control the pandemic of COVID-19, says the Ambassador of China to Cyprus, Huang Xingyuan, and speaks of a “miracle” in comparison to the situation elsewhere in Europe.

In an article, posted on Wednesday in the Embassy’s Facebook account, Ambassador Huang also expresses his confidence that “Cyprus will win the battle against COVID-19 and the world will triumph over this common enemy of humankind, and China-Cyprus friendship and cooperation will come out of pandemic much stronger.”

A decrease to the number of new confirmed cases in recent days seems to indicate that Cyprus has reached a turning point in fighting COVID-19, the Ambassador notes. “This should be considered a miracle as compared to the entire European continent which has fallen as a whole and seen a relatively high rate of infections” he adds.

The Ambassador attributes results to a number of reasons, and says that the Cypriot government has attached great importance to control the pandemic and adopted the correct measures. The government made a prompt response from the very beginning by implementing stricter prevention and control measures than those of other European countries instead of pursuing the so-called “herd immunity” policy, he adds.

Another reason is, according to Ambassador Huang, the fact that all stakeholders in Cyprus have remained in solidarity and formed a united front against the pandemic. “There used to be different opinions among political parties, interest groups and various communities, whether on internal and external affairs or on the Cyprus problem. However and in the face of the pandemic, the Cypriot people united as a whole, giving unswerving support to the most courageous doctors and nurses to fight the virus and save lives” he says.

Third, the Ambassador of China notes that the general public has been highly cooperative with government measures, showing impressive levels of self-discipline and patriotism, even when measures interrupted life-long Easter traditions.

“Thanks to the sound policies and positive guidance of the government, the anti-pandemic efforts of Cyprus have been on the right track” the Ambassador goes on and says that extreme remarks find no market and discriminatory behaviors no space. “I have rarely heard complaints of racist acts from Chinese citizens living in Cyprus, in sharp contrast to the situation in the United States and some other countries” he notes.

According to Ambassador Huang, China and Cyprus have fought the pandemic with mutual support and concerted efforts, while the Chinese Embassy has built joint prevention and control mechanisms with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health and other pertinent authorities of Cyprus.

“I personally keep a hotline contact with Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides and other officials of Cyprus” he goes on and refers to the three batches of Chinese donation that arrived timely in Cyprus.

“Dawn is ahead, but there is still a long way to go before achieving a full victory against the pandemic” the Ambassador says and appears confident that Cyprus will win the battle.

Third batch of China’s medical donation to Cyprus to arrive next week, Embassy says

The third batch of China’s donation of medical supplies will be transported to Cyprus next week, onboard a Cypriot chartered flight, says the Embassy of China to Cyprus. China is ready to reciprocate Cyprus’ kindness, as a true friend and trustworthy partner, a relevant announcement says.

According to the Chinese Embassy, Ambassador Huang Xingyuan and Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides will attend on Monday the handover ceremony of China’s donation to Cyprus, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia.

It is noted that on April 11, the second batch of China’s donation of medical supplies arrived at Larnaca via a Cypriot chartered flight along with other procured goods of Cyprus. This batch of medical supplies include 20,600 FFP2 masks, 110,000 disposable medical masks, 30,000 non-medical masks and 500 non-medical protective coveralls donated by the Embassy of China in Cyprus, Chinese companies and sister cities, it is added.

The third batch includes 5,000 protective coveralls, 417 sets of test kits (for 10,008 persons) and 10,000 N95 masks which belong to the official aid from the Chinese government to the government of Cyprus, along with 50,000 disposable medical masks donated by sister city will be transported to Cyprus onboard anther Cypriot charter flight, the Embassy announcement says.

It is also noted that on April 2, China handed over the first batch of medical supplies to Cyprus, including 1,320 protective coveralls, 5,000 KN95 masks, and 5000 disposable medical masks donated by the Embassy of China in Cyprus and Chinese companies.

“In the past two weeks, the Embassy of China in Cyprus has made or is making free provisions of over 14,000 disposable medical and non-medical masks to the municipality of Pafos, local hospitals, schools and government departments to help alleviate the shortage in medical supplies” the Chinese Embassy says.

Moreover, it is noted that since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe, China has been closely following the situation in Cyprus. “The Embassy of China in Cyprus has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health of Cyprus on a 24/7 basis as part of the joint prevention and control efforts” the announcement says.

It is also noted that in this urgent mission to aid Cyprus, both public and private sectors of China have been fully engaged. “Chinese local governments such as the City of Jinhua of Zhejiang Province, Chinese companies such as Huawei, and cities of Nanjing and Guangzhou, sister cities to Limassol and Ayia Napa, have all done their part by lending a helping hand in different ways. We are pleased to have learned, that the Chinese communities in Cyprus and their Cypriot neighbors and friends have been voluntarily helping each other out in this difficult time. Nothing could have been more effective in demonstrating the true spirit of Strength in Unity” the Embassy notes.

Moreover, it says that both China and Cyprus have shown impressive determination and resilience in combating COVID-19. “Driven by a strong commitment to safeguarding health and security of citizens of both countries and the world, China and Cyprus enforced comprehensive and rigorous measures in a timely manner to contain the spread of the virus and spared no effort to treating patients” the Embassy goes on.

“As China fought against the epidemic full front, President Nicos Anastasiades, House President Demetris Syllouris and Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides sent letters of sympathy and support to the Chinese leadership, and made an active effort in ensuring the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese diaspora in Cyprus. We are deeply moved by this invaluable friendship of Cyprus and will keep it in our hearts. As situation in Cyprus gets critical, China is ready to reciprocate the kindness and continue to provide support within our capacity to Cyprus as a true friend and trustworthy partner” says the Embassy of China.

The Embassy notes finally that through joint efforts of both China and Cyprus, Cyprus will be able to win the fight against COVID-19 soon and that the friendship and partnership between the two countries “will come out of the pandemic even closer and poised for further growth.”

China working closely with Cyprus for timely arrival of medical supplies, Ambassador Huang tells CNA

The first batch of China’s medical supplies are ready for transport to Cyprus, says the Ambassador of China to Cyprus Huang Xingyuan, and notes that the two countries are working closely to ensure their timely arrival to aid the fight against COVID -19.

Speaking to CNA, Ambassador Huang also refers to measures taken by Nicosia in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus, noting that “it is absolutely correct for Cyprus to make prevention of imported cases and death as its priority.”

The Ambassador of the People`s Republic of China also expresses confidence in the resilience of the Cypriot economy. Moreover, he says that actions currently being taken by countries around the world to fight COVID-19 are not sufficient and echoes the call of the President of China, Xi Jinping, for a collective response.

Asked about the main lessons China learned in the fight against COVID-19, Ambassador Huang lists four aspects. “First, the Communist Party of China is a party for the people and always prioritizes people`s health and safety. Herd immunity is not an option for us” he says.

Secondly, he says that China has staged a nationwide fight against COVID-19. All people were mobilized for joint prevention and control in an open, transparent and confident manner, he adds.

Third, China has responded at the fastest speed ever possible, completing specialized hospitals to tackle severe cases and building mobile cabin hospitals to cure patients with mild symptoms, the Ambassador goes on.

As a final point, he says that China has adapted response strategies as the epidemic evolves. “The whole country supported Wuhan and the economic life resumed to support epidemic control, thus creating a virtuous circle” he says.

He notes, moreover, that Chinese hospitals check and protect doctors, families stay home for self-quarantine, lockdown measures are fully obeyed and personal hygiene habits are strictly followed.

Asked about the way the experience of China may apply to Cyprus, he says that “recently the Cypriot government has been taking powerful and appropriate measures. It is absolutely correct for Cyprus to make prevention of imported cases and death as its priority.”

The Ambassador appears certain that problems shall be timely solved, including shortage of medical staff who have been partially infected, shortage of medical supplies and logistic capacity, shortage of experiences in fighting major pandemics. “China`s assistance has been targeted at the above problems” he says.

On another question, about the drugs in development to treat COVID-19, Ambassador Huang says that both China and the US have put vaccines to clinical tests and other countries also work on it. “When exactly vaccines go to market is a professional issue of science. But I am certain of one fact. If some countries can give up narrow mindedness and selfishness and share research results with concerted efforts, we will step closer to vaccines” he notes.

As for the social and economic impact of COVID-19, the Ambassador notes that the pandemic has been the greatest challenge and crisis facing humanity since World War II, causing major damage to the development of countries worldwide and the global economy.

Given its prevalence, complexity and global spread, we need time and concerted efforts on the global level to heal the damage of the pandemic, he goes on.

“I believe COVID-19 has a direct impact on the highly internationalized Cypriot economy. We have confidence in Cypriot economy’s resilience and quick recovery with lessons previously gained from the European debt crisis” says the Ambassador of China.

Asked if global actors are doing enough to address the crisis, Ambassador Huang replies that actions currently being taken by countries around the world to this end are not sufficient.

He notes that the issue was discussed during the G20 Extraordinary Virtual Leaders` Summit on COVID-19, adding that there have been divergences in terms of polices, speed and level of response by different countries.

Replying to a question with regard to cooperation with EU leaders, the Ambassador echoes the four proposals made by President Xi Jinping at the virtual summit: “We need to be resolute in fighting an all-out global war against the COVID -19 outbreak, make a collective response for control and treatment at the international level, support international organizations in playing their active roles, and enhance international macro-economic policy coordination.” The international community must strengthen unity and cooperation to win the fight against this common enemy of humankind, the Ambassador adds.

The Ambassador notes finally that the first batch of China’s medical supplies to Cyprus includes protective ware and masks donated by the Chinese Government, companies and sister cities. The goods are ready for transport from China to Cyprus, while China has been working closely with Cyprus to ensure its timely arrival to aid Cyprus in the fight against COVID -19, he concludes.
