Cyprus trade deficit at €540 million in February, according to preliminary data

Cyprus external trade deficit amounted to €540 million, according to preliminary estimates published by Cyprus’ Statistical Service.

According to Cystat’s preliminary estimates for the foreign trade of Cyprus in February 2020, total imports rose by 34.6% and amounted to €759 mn compared to €563.8 mn in February 2019.

Imports from other EU Member States in February 2020 reached €383.1 mn and from third countries €375.9 mn compared to €369.8 mn and €194.0 mn respectively in February 2019.

Total exports in February 2020 amounted to €219.3 mn as compared to €187.8 mn in February 2019, recording an increase of 16.8%, Cystat added.

Exports to other EU Member States in February 2020 were €76 mn and to third countries €143.3 mn compared to €63.9 mn and €123.9 mn respectively in February 2019.

According to Cystat, imports in February 2020 included the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €221.4 mn as compared to €38.8 mn in February 2019.

Furthermore, exports in February 2020 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €56.7 mn compared to €41.9 mn in February 2019.

Total value of building permits increases by 51.6% in January 2020

The total value of building permits permits increased by 51.6% in January 2020, compared to the same month last year, despite a small increase in their number, according to data announced by the Statistical Service on Wednesday.

The number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices during January 2020 stood at 538, according to a relevant announcement. The total value of these permits reached €178.6 million and the total area 165.8 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 696 dwelling units.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the number of building permits issued decreased by 1.1%. The total value of these permits increased by 51.6% and the total area by 55%. Τhe number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 27%.

Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

In a separate announcement, the Statistical Service says that according to a preliminary estimate, the House Price Index (HPI) for the fourth quarter of 2019 amounts to 101.81 units. Compared to the third quarter of 2019, the HPI decreased by 3.7% while compared to the Index of the corresponding quarter of 2018, the Index decreased by 4.8%.

Inflation up 0.7% in March

Cyprus inflation rose 0.7% in March as the Statistical Service of Cyprus reported on Wednesday.

In March 2020, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0.11 units and reached 101.34 units compared to 101.23 units in February 2020. Compared to March 2019, the CPI increased by 0.7%.

For the period January-March 2020, the CPI increased by 1.1% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

As regards the economic origin, the largest change when compared to the index of March 2019 was recorded in Electricity (9.2%), while comparing to the index of the previous month the largest change was monitored in Agricultural Goods (-5.8%).

Analysis of percentage changes
Compared to March 2019, the categories Communication and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels recorded the largest changes with percentages of 4.1% and 3.7% respectively.

In comparison to the CPI of the previous month, the largest change was noted in Clothing and Footwear (11%).

For the period January–March 2020, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the largest changes were recorded in Communication (3.8%), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (2.8%) and Transport (2.5%).

Analysis of effects in units

Compared to the Index of March 2019, the category Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels had the largest effect on the change of the CPI (0.45).

The category Clothing and Footwear had the largest positive effect on the change of the CPI compared to the previous month (0.71).

Electricity had the most notable effect on the change of the CPI of March 2020 compared to March 2019 (0.33).

Finally, clothing had the largest positive effect of 0.49 units on the change of the CPI of March 2020 compared to the previous month, whereas fresh vegetables and petroleum products had the largest negative effect of 0.59 and 0.36 units respectively.

Cyprus public expenditure on education at 6.1% of GDP in 2017, official data show

Public expenditure in all levels of education, amounted to €1,227.6 million, in 2017, and accounted for 16.6% of the government budget and 6.1% of the Gross Domestic Product, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service, on Monday, show.

In particular, based on the results of the Annual Survey on Education for the school year 2017/2018, the total number of pupils and students at all educational levels was 191,787 recording an increase of 1.8% compared, to the school year 2016/2017 where the total number of pupils and students was 188,311.

The total number of educational establishments also increased to 1,338 in the school year 2017/2018, compared to 1,333 in the previous school year.

During 2017/2018 the total number of teachers, amounted to 14,982 compared to 14,950 of the previous school-year, also recording an increase of 0.2%.

In pre-school and pre-primary education, for the school year 2017/2018, 745 kindergartens and day nursery schools operated, with 32,522 children enrolled.

In primary education 362 schools operated, attended by 56,699 pupils.

In secondary education 54,966 pupils enrolled in 165 schools.

In tertiary education, 55 educational institutions operated with a total number of 47,169 students.

According to the annual survey on education, 11 special schools operated with 431 pupils.

Public expenditure in all levels of education, amounted to €1,227.6 million, in 2017, and accounted for 16.6% of the government budget and 6.1% of the Gross Domestic Product.

The cost per student for public education, in 2017 measured, in terms of current expenditure, was €5,025 for pre-school and pre-primary, €6,137 for primary, €10,093 for secondary general, €12,828 for secondary technical and €10,328 for tertiary education.
