Billed as ‘The longest day golf challenge,’ the four participants include international footballer, Jason Puncheon (ex Crystal Palace and currently playing for Paphos FC), Adam Collinson (Elea Golf club pro), Derek Smith (Secret Valley golf superintendent), and businessman Mark Petts (managing director of Aphrodite rentals).

The four are taking on a tough golf challenge of playing four rounds in one day, playing from dawn until dusk to raise as much money as possible. The first will be played at Secret Valley, then Aphrodite Hills, Minthis and Elea Estate in aid of Archangel Michael Hospice in Paphos.

“Derek, Adam and I all play football together and have been friends for years and Jason has fallen in love with golf since he’s been in Cyprus. It’s great as he has some good connections for donations,” Petts told the Cyprus Mail.

The businessman’s father died of cancer last year, which gave him a first-hand insight into knowing how important palliative care is to both cancer patients and their families. The four chose the hospice as their beneficiary.

The golfers also visited the hospice in Mesa Chorio and discovered that the facility almost faced closure during the coronavirus lockdown, as donations and income from shops has all but dried up.

“We learned that the hospice relies solely on charitable donations and doesn’t receive any help from the state. So when I was approached by Derek, who took part in a similar event with Adam four years ago, I jumped at the chance,” he said.

The Archangel Michael hospice in Mesa Chorio opened in June 2015 and has nine rooms used for palliative and respite care, including two for children. It costs around €300,000 a year to operate the facility, which has already helped hundreds of patients since it opened.

On Saturday, June 27, the golfers will tee-off at Secret Valley at 5am, then play at Aphrodite Hills and Minthis and conclude, hopefully before sunset, at Elea Estates where a drinks reception and BBQ will be held.

Radio station Rock FM will follow the event and will be broadcasting live from the finish, he said.

So far, the golfers have raised €6,000 for the hospice and they hope to raise even more. The money will be used to purchase PPE, medicines, drips, nursing equipment and other vital paraphernalia, said Petts

“We all hope that by playing 72 holes and walking more than 20 miles in one day, we hope to help the hospice continue their important when they’re needed most,” he said.

“One of the most important projects in Paphos, that of the largest bus terminal in Cyprus, to be built in the municipal parking lot Karavella, started today,” the municipality said in an announcement.

The creation of a modern transport hub, with a budget of some 3 million euros, is part of the wider project to build a network of public transport and public health infrastructures in Paphos and Geroskipou using the Study-Construction-Maintenance” method, with a total expenditure of just over 7.6 million euros.

The mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, described the project as “key” to revitalising economic activity in the traditional city centre, pointing out that hundreds of thousands of foreign and local visitors will be using the terminal as a transport hub.

He said that the project would include a large building, a main bus stand, bus and taxi parking spaces, “smart” boarding stops and modern sanitation.

In addition to the large modern bus terminal in the Karavella area, the project also includes the creation of two transit and bus parking spaces, one on the Tombs Avenue of the Kings and the second in the parking lot of the archaeological park at the harbour in Kato Paphos.

It also includes the creation and installation of 196 “smart” bus stops in Paphos and Geroskipou,and 30 modern public toilets.

The project is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund.

According to Kitasweather.com, the second largest dam in the Republic of Cyprus overflowed on March 5 just after midnight for the sixth time since it was built in 1982.

The overflow at Asprokremmos in Paphos district caught the attention and inspired the imagination of people all around the island, particularly since it only had 8 million cubic metres of water on December 1 and reached full capacity over the weekend at 52 million.

The overflow had been imminent for days, with social media users online trying to predict the exact time for the runoff water. In some cases, people were recording videos of themselves pouring water into the dam to make it overflow faster.

Safety measures will remain in place at the dam, following consultations last week with the Water Development Department. Police warn the public that the road above the dam will remain closed to all traffic including street vendors.

Long-standing tradition for families

Overflow spectacles are a long-standing tradition for families in Cyprus, who rush to see the awesome view and have a fun day.

Cars will have access to the dam through the old Paphos-Limassol road, while private vehicles can access the dam only from the west side through the Kseros Potamos bridge. Buses and oversized vehicles only can access the dam from the east side through Nikokleias street.

Street vendors will be asked to set shop off the road as long as they do not block traffic.
