All students of primary and secondary education in Cyprus are set to return to their classes on May 21 while final year students return to school on May 11, Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Minister Prodromos Prodromou announced on Wednesday, following a meeting at the Presidential Palace with all parties involved chaired by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.

Prodromou also announced that Pancyprian Exams on the results of which students are awarded their school diploma and achieve their positions at universities in Cyprus and Greece will start on June 9.

President Anastasiades chaired a meeting on Wednesday morning with the participation of the Education Minister, representatives of all the teachers unions, the students’ union and parents associations, as well as representatives of the Cyprus Youth Parliament.

In statements after the meeting Prodromou said that thanks to everyone’s effort and the right policies which were implemented the ground has been prepared for the gradual lifting of restrictive measures. Schools have been closed in Cyprus in the context of the effort to contain the COVID-19 pandemic since mid-March.

In this context, he noted, the government has planned the reactivation of all sectors and the gradual resumption of operations of all schools.

Remote learning which took place in the meantime, he said, is an achievement which will keep and develop further, he said.

At the same time however, because remote learning does not fully replace teaching in the classroom we will make the most of what we have paved the way for together, he said, that is to say that “children, students of all levels to be able to return to school, taking the necessary precautions, with careful planning and upholding health protocols.”

He recalled that it has already become known that students in their final year at secondary school level, as well as in technical schools and third year students in professional education and training return to their classes on May 11 with a maximum of 12 students per classroom.

In order for this to be possible, half of the students will go to school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the other half on Thursday and Friday and so on, he explained.

Prodromou continued saying that the government has also decided that the rest of the students in primary and secondary education will return to school on May 21. Pre-primary education and kindergartens will also resume operations.

He also said that all schools would be disinfected before their date of operation.

The Education Minister also announced that during the next Cabinet meeting a proposal to test 20,000 teachers and students is expected to be approved.

The number of students in Cyprus’ higher education institutions is constantly rising, the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, said on Thursday evening.

Addressing a graduation ceremony of postgraduate students, at the University of Cyprus, the President said that according to official statistical data, from a total of 32,000 students in Cyprus’ higher education institutes during the academic year 2012-2013, 8,000 of them were citizens of other EU member states or came from third countries.

During the academic year 2017-2018 the total number of students rose to 48,000 students, with 24,000 of them originating from EU and third countries, the President went on.

He said moreover, that according to data from the Ministry of Education, there seems to be an increase in these numbers for the academic year 2018-2019. “The total number of students reaches 51,000 , of which 27,000 come from European and third countries” he noted.

The President also stressed that according to European Commission reports, Cyprus has the second highest rate when it comes to completing higher education studies in the EU, with 57.1%, compared to the EU average of 40.7%.

“This fact is indicative of the quality and high level of our students and graduates, as well as of our academic institutions and the education they offer” he noted.

The President of Cyprus said finally that the state acknowledges the importance of the University of Cyprus as an educational and cultural institution, and takes note of the significant work that is being produced there.

Since its foundation, the University of Cyprus, appropriately staffed with academic and administrative staff, focuses on quality, on being extrovert, on research and innovation, and seeks to maximize its scientific work, while pursuing excellence, he added.

Going back to school after a break, especially if the break lasted
almost 3 months, is not an easy and pleasant situation for parents, teachers
and of course students! Having countless summer memories of sea dives, fun with
friends and carefree days makes it even harder to embrace the idea of your kids
going back to school!

However, this particular situation is not all black and white. There are some
tips to make things easier for everyone and smooth the adjustment period needed
to get back in the school routine.

Prepare for the new term in advance

If your kid is a “first time schooler” you should help them
get used to the uniform they are obliged to wear i.e maybe wear them a few
times before school starts just to get the hang of it.

Extra Tips:

Make sure you have plenty of spares, otherwise you
will never leave the laundry room!

Label everything to avoid any mix ups with other
kids’ stuff and make it easier to return them to you in case they get lost.

Now, If you have returning schoolers then you have to check
if their existing uniforms fit or you need to get them new ones.

Shop for school supplies, pens pencils, cases, school bags
etc and have them ready for the first day at school.

Prepare your child for their return to the school
routine

The school routine should “return” at least a week before school
starts! When gradually put the kids to sleep earlier and wake them up a little
sooner, you help their inner clock adjust to the latest changes in sleep habits.
Additionally, set a time you should leave the house for school and stick to
that! The kids should be dressed, washed, with their teeth brushed etc and
ready to leave the house on the set time as consistency help them stick to the
particular routine and time frames.

Don’t take away all the fun!

Create constant reminders that the new term is coming but is
not here yet! Studying and fun can happen simultaneously even thought their
minds should start to re-focus on learning. You can “home -school” with fun learning games such as groceries
shopping where they keep the money and should sum up the cost etc. Older kids
should be reminded that school time is here with simple activities on learned
topics just to set their mind back on school stuff!

Most importantly, create a positive “myth” around the big return back to school, especially if you have young children just starting school. Discuss all the fun they will be having through various learning activities and along with their friends to relax them (and let’s be honest: calm yourself as well?)

On the night before, make sure to get the kids into bed
early, so they have a good rest and wake up fresh in the morning!

Last Tip: Practice your patience skills ?
