Ice-cream is the undisputed king of summertime treats. Everyone loves it, whether young or old, men or women. It’s cold, it’s refreshing, and most importantly, it’s delicious!

In essence, ice cream is the frozen dessert, which is usually made from cream and milk.

Milk-free ice cream is called granita and usually covers fruit flavors such as lemon or apricot.

The meaning of the word “ice cream” varies from country to country.

However, to separate different varieties and types of ice cream, terms such as: frozen yogurt, sorbet and gelato are used.

The most widespread view of the origin of ice cream is that of Chinese origin, that is, the ice cream is made specifically from Himalayan snows and cream of rice flour, milk and honey.

Many times, ice creams are decorated with various ingredients such as fruit, whipped cream, pies, chocolate or colored truffles, cookies or even syrup, it can be chocolate, strawberry, caramel and cherry or others.

Bulk ice creams, with which the customer can make flavor combinations, are served in a cone, cup or wide glass and are consumed with special ice cream spoons that have a long body.

Ice cream can also be served in balls as an accompaniment to crepes or pies (mainly apple pie) but also to syrupy sweets (such as baklava or kadaifi). Also, there are packaged ice creams on a stick and ice cream sandwiches.

Although today there are ice cream shops, few have “survived”. They work either in a bicycle-cart or in a van, which transports the refrigerator that keeps the ice cream. There are also ice cream parlors that have a permanent place to sell their ice creams.

The most common ice cream flavors are:

Chocolate

Strawberry

Banana

Cream or Vanilla

There are many others such as:

The deputy ministry for tourism in cooperation with the travel agents’ association (Acta) announced on Thursday the launch of a scheme aimed at encouraging domestic tourism.

The scheme ‘Tailormade mini breaks’ offers holiday packages throughout Cyprus for families, couples and small groups of people, designed based on their personal preferences and needs.

Holiday makers can choose to stay in hotels, apartments and agrotourism accommodation, the ministry said.

“Accommodation can be combined with experiences such as themed walks, sports activities, visits to museums and cultural heritage monuments, theme parks and more,” it said.

The scheme, that will run from this month to June next year, aims at strengthening domestic tourism and introducing locals to the country’s “hidden treasures.”

Those interested are urged to contact one of the travel agencies participating in the scheme for more information on all services such as accommodation, places eat, and activities and to secure the best prices, the ministry said.

Greek Minister of Tourism, Haris Theoharis, has told the Cyprus News Agency that the conclusion of bilateral agreements with countries with similar epidemiological profiles –such as Cyprus and Israel– is an option considered by the Greek government.

“The citizens’ safety is the first concern that guides our actions. Τhe reception of tourists in our country will be realized in a balanced way, based on the epidemiological data, the hygiene protocols and the developments as regards the rapid testing”, Theoharis says.

“We are closely monitoring events, we are recording all the available data, and we intend to proceed, in consultation with other countries, to the reception of tourists in a way that ensures the health of our citizens and visitors”, he stressed.

In this context, the Greek Minister of Tourism explained that the prospect of concluding bilateral agreements with countries that managed successfully the containment of pandemic – such as Cyprus and Israel – is an option examined by the Greek government.

“We are considering various scenarios, and we are making projections in order to proceed to the rebooting of tourism in the best way we can. The creation of the so-called “safety zone” between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, is a prospect that is on the table. However, there is still a significant number of variables to be clarified”, he explained.

“All issues are open, but we are positive towards this prospect and we consider that we will manage to find common ground, in alignment with the hygiene protocols and standards, and to reach a reciprocal agreement”, Theoharis said. As he explained, the issue of the bilateral agreements will be made more concrete in the coming period.

The Greek Minister of Tourism said that Greece was the first country that raised the issue of tourism in the agenda of European discussions. “The recent developments with the European Commission’s proposals are very important, as they create the framework for a coordinated exit from the crisis, while preserving the positive results that Greece succeeded as regards the containment of covid-19”, Theoharis said.

As regards the opening of a shipping line between Greece and Cyprus, Theoharis explained that it represents a project positively considered by the Greek government, the implementation of which will be examined in its details, after the settlement of the issues linked with Covid-19.

The heatwave is our ally in the fight against the coronavirus, Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School and member of the Ministry of Health Scientific Advisory Committee, Dr Petros Karayiannis has told Cyprus News Agency.

“I think the heatwave is on our side. Due to the high temperatures we have at the moment, even if someone is sick and sneezes, the droplets will not stay wet for a long time, on the contrary, they will dry very quickly and the virus will be inactivated in this way,” he said.

He pointed out that hot surfaces do not help the virus as well as its transmission as people are in open areas, thus that heatwave is our ally in this struggle.

Karayiannis also stressed that in the next few days COVID-19 cases may disappear or occur only sporadically.

He also said that the number of samples taken on a daily basis is very large compared to other European countries, adding this procedure followed by Cyprus is capable of detecting sporadic cases while other countries, such as Greece, do not take them into account.

In reply to a question, he said that he was not particularly concerned about the two cases found among students in Aradippou, describing it as an isolated incident in an area where there was a problem in the past.

He expressed hope there would be nothing alarming about the samples taken from now until Thursday when the rest of the students return to school.

In addition, Professor said that we should learn to live with the virus, noting that every time a case is found in any environment, it does not mean that we have to close everything and go back fifteen days. “We need to implement isolation protocols by tracking contacts and life goes on, ” he said.

Karayiannis said that the Cypriot society is ready for the second phase of easing the restrictive measures put in place in an effort to contain the spread of the pandemic.

“We are definitely ready for the second phase. With the picture we have at the moment, we are ready to move on to the second phase. I have no doubt about that and I don`t think there will be a reversal», he said.

He also said after the first easing of restrictive measures with nearly 60,000 people going back to work and up until now not a single case had been found among those workers with the samples taken.

He considered it a `great misfortune` the fact that two cases were found in a school at Aradippou creating a sense of uncertainty, adding that this should urgently remind us of the need to be very careful and not to relax yet.

Karayiannis stated that the current situation allow us to move on with the implementation of the 3rd phase with regard to measures relaxation.

“With the return of children to schools, sampling will continue», he said, and expressed the views that until then the results will be such that they will allow us to proceed to the 3rd phase as well.

He expressed optimism, saying that at the moment there is nothing to worry about in our epidemiological picture.

He also said that foreign visitors would not come to the country right after the opening of the airports scheduled to take place on June 9. He said the arrival of passengers will take place later because more processes are still needed to be held.

He finally called on those who go to the beaches due to high temperatures to comply with protective measures and keep the necessary distances between them.

Asked if we should wear a mask on the beach, he said it is not recommended unless someone wants to wear it for their own reasons.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios, said Tuesday that he hopes that Cyprus could open up for tourists in July, noting that everything will depend on the scientific data concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, both in Cyprus and in the tourists countries of origin.

“If all goes well in Cyprus and abroad, we will probably be able to have our first visitors timidly in early July,” he said speaking to CNA.

He pointed out that the Deputy Ministry and tourism stakeholders in Cyprus, must be ready to respond to the call of travel agents, as soon as conditions allow it, noting however that “it is too early to make any decision”.

He added that the date on which Cyprus will open up as a destination will not necessarily be the same as the date when the first tourist arrives, as foreign markets may not be ready yet.

He also said that bookings will be set at the last minute this year and added that if some airlines or travel organizers have booked earlier, this should not be taken for granted because no one knows how things could turn out.

As for the possible tourist markets for Cyprus this year, as he said, there are some countries that seem to manage better than others the pandemic and probably their citizens want to travel in the summer. These countries are Germany, Scandinavian countries, Austria, Switzerland, Greece and Israel. Tourists from these countries, he said, appear to be able to travel earlier than other countries, but as he said, “no one knows yet”. Cyprus, he added, which was also successful in managing the pandemic, is a country that tourist see as a possible destination.

However, he clarified that Cyprus would take into account scientific data proving that the country of origin has managed to control COVID-19, before accepting any tourists.

At the same time, he added that many hotels may choose to stay closed and some others may choose to open later in the summer, since operating costs will be increased due to some restrictions on how they will operate.

As for domestic tourism, Perdios said it could cover some of the losses, but to a small extent. He explained that until last year domestic tourism was around 6-7% of the tourism in Cyprus and with some actions by the Ministry of Interior, the contribution of domestic tourism could increase to 10-12% this year.

However, as Perdios said, Cypriot citizens could not replace almost 40 million overnight stays.

He also said that the Deputy Ministry will launch a targeted campaign in the direction of domestic tourism, while there will be subsidized holidays for social tourism, short getaways and organized excursions.

At the same time, he noted that he is aware of the fact the people of Cyprus will come from a period of inactivity of two or three months which may have affected their incomes, while as he said, if Greece opens up, many Cypriots may choose it as a destination.
