Cyprus entry requirements

Entry and Transit restrictions

Entry regulations are applicable only to the areas that are under Government of the Republic of Cyprus control.

A passport is required by all travelers except for holders of:
– an entry permit issued by the United Nations.
– a document issued to stateless and recognized refugees.

In addition to the above, citizens of the European Union (EU) countries, as well as Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, may enter Cyprus with their identity, provided there is a photograph in it.

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus refuses entry to:
Holders of “passports” issued illegally by the secessionist entity, the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” (TRNC).

Entry visas (visas)

Work Visas
For those intending to work in Cyprus, a work permit is required from the Population and Immigration Archives and therefore no visa is required to travel to Cyprus.

Traveler’s advice on the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus is the only official recognized government on the island, a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004, as well as a member of the United Nations and other International Organizations.

At present, it is possible for foreign tourists visiting the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus to be able to go to the occupied areas. It is prudent to note the following precautions:

– Staying in Greek Cypriot-owned hotels in the occupied areas, which are being exploited illegally, puts you at great risk of taking legal action on the part of legal owners.

– Any entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus through any other port or airport in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus is illegal, and travelers may have legal consequences. Therefore, we encourage you to travel through the recognized points of entry (Larnaca and Pafos International Airports / Limassol, Larnaca, Pafos and Latsi).

Traveling with a pet
If you are traveling from an EU Member State to Cyprus, you have the possibility to bring your pets, provided that they have either a passport or animal health certificate.

For non-EU travelers, you must have a Vaccination Certificate (specifically showing rabies vaccines).

The following breeds of dogs are not allowed in the Republic of Cyprus, irrespective of their country of origin:
– American Pitbull Terrier; Pitbull Terrier
– Japanese Tosa; Tosa Inu
– Dogo Argentino; Argentinian Mastiff
– Fila Brasileiro; Brazilian Mastiff

Please also note the following:
– Animals must be transported in cages according to IATA specifications.
– Animals and their accompanying documents are checked upon arrival by a Veterinary Officer or by the Customs Officer acting on behalf of the Veterinary Services.
– Animals meeting all the veterinary conditions may enter the country without quarantine.
– The Veterinary Officer responsible decides on the basis of veterinary conditions if the animal should be quarantined or not.

– The date, time of arrival and flight number of the aircraft or the name of the ship with which the animal is to arrive in Cyprus must be communicated to the District Veterinary Officer of the point of entry 48 hours prior to arrival.

Within the European Union (EU)
There are no limits to what you can buy and take with you when traveling between EU countries, provided they are for personal use and not for resale.

VAT and other taxes are included in the price you pay, and given that there are differences from country to country, you may want to take advantage of attractive price differences.

Stores at airports and on boats may also offer some opportunities, although tax-free shops no longer exist when traveling within the EU.

Tobacco and alcohol
Goods are considered to be for personal use when they do not exceed the following quantities:
– 800 cigarettes
– 400 cigars
– 200 cigars
– 1 kilogram of smoke
– 10 liters of alcoholic beverages
– 20 liters of fortified wines (such as the door and the sherry)
– 90 liters of wine (of which the sparkling wine does not exceed 60 liters)
– 110 liters of beer

If you carry large amounts of tobacco or alcoholic products – especially when the quantities exceed the quantitative limits mentioned above – you may be asked to answer questions about:
– your commercial status and the reasons for exporting such goods
– the place where the goods are located
– any documents relating to these goods
– the nature and quantity of the goods
– the frequency of your trips.

Please note: Travelers under the age of 17 are not entitled to buy duty-free tobacco and spirits.

Outside the EU
If you enter the EU from a non-EU country, you can bring with you goods exempt from VAT, import duties and excise duties for personal use within the limits set out below. The same applies if you come from the Canary Islands, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar or other non-VAT territories and EU special provisions.

Tobacco products
200 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco

Alcoholic beverages
– 1 liter of alcoholic beverages above 22% vol. or ethyl alcohol of 80% vol. and 2 liters of boiled or sparkling wine, 4 liters of non-sparkling wine
– 16 liters of beer

The exemption may be applied to any combination of tobacco products or types of alcoholic beverages provided that the total sum of the percentages used by the individual allowances does not exceed 100%.

Please note: Travelers under the age of 17 are not entitled to purchase duty-free tobacco and spirits.

Other goods
For goods of any other description, the exemption is € 430. For travelers under the age of 15, the exemption is € 175.

Drugs
According to the Cypriot legislation, the import, possession and use of narcotics and psychotropic substances is strictly prohibited.

Agricultural Restrictions

The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment wishes to inform all travelers that in order to protect the country’s agriculture from the risk of introducing new pests and diseases, the import of agricultural products or propagating material – such as fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, fruits, seeds, bulbs, grafts, wood and other wood products, etc. – without the approval of the Competent Authorities, is prohibited.

Pursuant to the Plant Diseases Act and in accordance with the Controls for the Importation of Products, it is prohibited to transport agricultural products or plants reproduced from abroad unless the relevant permit has been issued previously by the Director of the Department of Agriculture.

Upon arrival in Cyprus, these products must be declared at the customs offices, where they must go for phytosanitary inspection by the authorized Agricultural Officer.

Everyone who violates the law and the orders issued under it is accountable, if found guilty, to a fine and / or imprisonment.

Import restrictions

There are also a number of other objects, the introduction of which is forbidden or restricted for various reasons, such as:

Firearms and non-firearms, such as military explosives and launchers, automatic firearms, ammunition, semiautomatic or repeating firearms semi-automatic, according to the First Appendix of the “Firearms and Non-Firearms Law” 2004
– Knives and knives
– Books, photos, movies and articles of obscene content
– Pirate or fake products (eg computer programs, video and audio tapes, cassettes, CDs, clothes, bags, etc.)
– Frozen meat, fish and their derived products, milk and dairy products
– Nuclear, chemical, toxic, biological weapons and similar substances
– Products used for illegal game hunting
– Counterfeit bank notes

– Goods dispatched or originating in embargoed countries by the United Nations Security Council and the European Union, such as Iraq, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sudan
– Kimberley rough diamonds
– Hazardous waste (in accordance with the Basel Convention)

Export restrictions

According to the Cypriot legislation, the export of certain items is prohibited or restricted, as all species whose importation is prohibited, namely:

– Illegal drugs
– Pirate and counterfeit products
– Knives, daggers, airships, shotguns and other illegal and dangerous weapons, their accessories and ammunition
– Antiquities and precious works of art
– Pornographic or offensive material
– Articles from precious metals destined for the Cypriot market
– Chemical substances
– Wild fauna and flora, endangered species and their products (Washington Convention – CITES), eg. animals, birds, poultry, lizards, cacti, skins, ivory, etc.

Please be advised that the above export restrictions require a special permit from the competent authority or agency on a case-by-case basis.
